Enjoy ;D
“Hey Doc”
Dr. Murdoch turned round to see his students all staring back at him. It was one of the only times he had seen them literally scared. He thought he should say something to make them feel better but nothing came to mind. He thought hard at what to say. But said nothing no reassuring words he usa7ually always has in hours need but this time even he didn’t have a grasp of the scenario. He was going over it in his head. How could this have happened? There was no record of what he knew of this ever happening.
“Hey Doc”
Dr. Murdoch realised that Marty was trying to talk to them. He looked as scared as everybody else. He was usually solitary and showed no emotion and here he was. He looked paler than usual and there was nearly a quiver in his voice.
“Yes, Marty” Dr. Murdoch finally said but the words took some effort.
“I might not be the smartest out of all of us. But I at least know that that is not a good sign so what are we going to do about it?” There was no joking in Marty’s voice anymore he was dead serious.
Dr. Murdoch was lost for words; he knew that he had to do something but what. If he informed the elders they would probably kill her. Then there would be investigations about her death. And then there was Mimi her roommate. She had already lost her best friend how would she feel if she lost another friend.
“Dr. Murdoch.”
Dr. Murdoch looked up to see Merrill walking towards.
“We need you to take charge here. We need your expertise more than ever. If we don’t hurry she could turn and kill your day students and alert the fury and this experiment will have been for nothing.”
With these strong words Dr. Murdoch regained his posture and thought hard of what to do first.
“Okay everybody listen to me. First we need to make sure she is at least a small part vampire. For all we know there could have been something wrong with the camera.
“Right” said Drew “and how are we going to do that.
“We need a sample of her blood”
“No problem I’ll go get it right now” Marty rose from his chair and was headed for the exit at the top of the cellar.
This was when the other four vampires moved swiftly and cut him off.
“You’re not going anywhere” said Essie as she bared her fangs at Marty.
“We need her blood; I’m offering to go get it.” Marty said with a smile.
“We need a sample of blood not a gallon of it.” Said Drew whose eyes were now crimson.
“He’s right” said Merrill.
“Trust you to side with him” said Marty.
Merrill was about to ask him what he meant by that when they heard a chair move and turned to see what had happened. It was the chair moving when Dr. Murdoch tried to snatch it off the back and it got caught. He put on his jacket and walked towards them staring at the ground, obviously trying to think of what to do next. He walked through the middle of the crowd towards the exit of the cellar. Just before he left the cellar to look at his students. They were still staring at him waiting for him to tell them what to do next.
“Get some rest I’ll get the sample myself. I’ll talk to you tomorrow after sunset and he was gone.
The five of students all walked over to the table and sat down staring at the monitor that showed Dillan’s crimson red eyes. As time rolled on they all left to their dorms to their coffins to think in exile. First to go was Merrill and not long after was Marty. Not long after these two Essie left she thought about saying something to comfort Karl but she couldn’t think of anything so she finally dragged herself to her coffin. And there was two Karl and Drew. Karl was going over in his mind how it was his fault. How if he had not talked to that rogue vampire, he would not have been manipulated and he would not have bit Dillan. And Drew was just sitting there watching Dillan as she slept. If only he could talk to her and ask her if it had happened again if she had ever felt the thirst. He knew though he could not because of what had happened with Sherry. And he did not want that to happen to her as well. Not long before sunrise Karl finally went to his dorm but Drew stayed. He continued to watch Dillan sleep to make sure she slept peacefully. He watched her until she woke up that morning. As soon as she woke he went to his room to mull over what had happened. But the second he closed the lid of his coffin he fell asleep.
The phone rang in Dillan’s dorm. Mimi answered it.
“Hello” she said as she picked up the phone.
“Hello Mimi its Dr. Murdoch.”
Mimi knew it was him the second he spoke. His voice was so unique to everybody at the school. “Oh hi sir what can I do for you this fine morning?” Mimi asked into the receiver sarcastically
“Well actually I was speaking to speak to Dillan.”
Mimi was about confused why he wanted to speak to Dillan so early in the morning especially since they both were in his class first today. But nonetheless she still passed the phone to Dillan.
“Hello Dr. Murdoch.” Dillan spoke into the phone extremely confused.
“Hello Dillan I was wondering if I could talk to you this morning before class?”
“Okay” Dillan answered “but what’s so important that it couldn’t wait till class.”
“It’s about your latest essay I need to ask you some questions on it.”
“Okay” Dillan tense “what type of questions?”
“I think you know, see you in ten minutes,”
“Okay bye” Dillan put down the receiver and fell back onto her bed and gazed at the ceiling. She felt something in the pit of her stomach.
“What was that all?” about asked Mimi.
“He wants to ask some questions about my last essay,” Dillan sounded slightly scared.
“What’s so bad about that? I read it it’s a good essay. Probably the best you have ever written. It’s way better than mine.”
With every compliment that came out of Mimi’s mouth Dillan felt worse and worse. She knew it was a good essay. Because it wasn’t hers. She had compiled it from good parts of Malcolm’s guys from the internet and Nick’s. Nick was Sherry’s supposed ex-boyfriend that’s what he said but Dillan didn’t believe him. In the short time she had gotten to know Sherry she knew that Nick was not the type of guy she would fall for. She remembered Drew the painter. He said he was something that he wasn’t and she exposed him for Sherry’s sake. But there was something else about him she just couldn’t remember. It was on the tip of her tongue but then it was gone.
“So what’s up with the essay?” asked Mimi sounding very intrigued.
Dillan sat up took a deep breath. “It’s not mine” she said exhaling another large breath.
Mimi’s eye’s opened wide. “What do you mean it’s not yours?”
“I made it up off other peoples and put it together and put my name on it.”
“You did what?” Mimi asked sounding quite astounded.
“I know it was stupid but I got writer’s block and I needed to pass.”
“Maybe Murdoch doesn’t want to talk about that he might not know.” Mimi said encouragingly.
“What would he want talk about then? It might be a good essay but it’s not that good he’d want to ask me how I felt as I writ it.
“I don’t know but you might want to get ready check the time.” Mimi nodded her head towards the clock on the wall.
Dillan couldn’t believe the time that short conversation took. She was meant to be down in Murdoch’s office in two minutes. She rushed to her cupboard and grabbed the first set of clothes that matched and changed quickly as possible.
Down in his office Dr. Murdoch was making a fresh pot of tea for him and Dillan and was still going over what he had saw last night in his head. He knew for a fact that Dillan was not a fully fledged vampire because he had taken classes in the sun when it was hot outside and she was always keen to attend so maybe she didn’t know what was happening. This was a good sign if it were true. It would mean she wasn’t hiding anything from him. He set the tray with pot of tea and cup and saucers on his table. He exhaled deeply he then went into his jacket pocket and pulled out a set of key’s he went to his desk and unlocked a draw on the right hand side and after rummaging through the contents pulled out a small jewellery box which he placed on his desk. He opened the box and within it pulled out a small golden ring with a small white diamond held in place with a gold cross and a sharp piece of gold protruding like a spike. He slipped the ring on his middle finger of right hand and closed the jewellery box again and put it back in the drawer. Just as there was a knock on the door. Dr. Murdoch and proceeded quickly towards the door. He opened it to see Dillan standing there looking tense biting on her nails.
“Dillan please come in” Dr. Murdoch sounded as cheerful as always as he stepped to the side of the door and raised an arm to show Dillan in. “Please sit down.” He said pointing towards the chair in front of the desk.
Dillan sat bolt upright arms folded. Looking around the room trying not to make eye contact. She was going over in her head what Dr. Murdoch was going to do to her for cheating. Would he expel her or was that just a bit cruel. Dr. Murdoch might have been a good teacher but when it came to teaching he had a zero tolerance policy.
“So your latest essay?” Dr. Murdoch said as he sat in the chair in the opposite side of the desk.
“What about it?” Dillan asked trying to be as casual as possible.
“Well it- cup of tea?” Dr. Murdoch asked changing the subject.
“No thank you” Dillan answered. She wondered why he had changed the subject so quickly. Wasn’t it the main reason they were going to be late for class.
“Are you sure, I made it myself?” Dr. Murdoch pushed a cup towards her.
Dillan shook her head. She checked her watch to see if it was time for class and she could delay this interrogation for a while. She was in luck it was time for class. “I think it’s time to get to class. They can’t start the lesson without you and I’m keen to learn.” She said this with an obviously fake laugh.
Dr. Murdoch’s gaze landed on her after checking the clock on his wall it almost looked as though he was scanning her for a second. Before his expression changed back to normal. I asked Malcolm to start the class for me if I was late. This way class begins on time and you don’t miss out on anything.
“How would I not miss out if class has started and I’m not there.” She asked hoping it would be a good excuse to leave.
“I want the truth here Dillan” Dr. Murdoch put his cup down on his table and stared right at her.
“Okay what is it?” Dillan’s palms were sweating as they were clamped to the side of the chair.
“Who do you honestly know would listen to Malcolm.” Dr. Murdoch let out a small chuckle.
Dillan joined in to try and play along.
“Anyway your right we don’t want to waste our time in here while Malcolm is bombarded with books do we?”
“Definitely not.”
“We better go then.” Dr. Murdoch got up and pushed his chair under his desk.
“Really?” Dillan was astounded “What about my essay?”
“It can wait to another time can’t it?”
Dillan sprung up out of the chair and walked towards the door. “Sure it can”
“Let me get the door for you” Dr. Murdoch said as he walked towards the door. He grabbed the handle and opened the door and used his right arm as a signal for Dillan to leave.
“Thank you” Dillan said as she left. “Ow! “ Dillan grabbed her arm. “What was that?” she asked as blood started to appear from a spot on her arm.
“Must have been my ring” Dr. Murdoch said as he pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket and gave it to Dylan. “Keep applying pressure I’ll have a look at it when I get to class.”
“You not coming?” Dillan asked as she gingerly wrapped the handkerchief around her arm making sure she didn’t tear it.
“I’ll be there in a few minutes you go on ahead.”
As Dillan left the room Dr. Murdoch shut the door behind her and locked it. He then walked back over to his desk and took out his keys and reopened the same drawer and pulled out the same small jewellery box and opened it and placed it on his desk. He then removed the ring from his finger. He held the small ring in his hand examining the diamond. It was no longer white it was blood red. It now had contained Dillan’s blood. When he jabbed her with it, it acted almost as a syringe. It had a small volume of her blood inside it. After staring at it for a moment he put it back in the box and then put it back in the drawer. He then locked the drawer put the keys back in his pocket and walked to the door and unlocked it and walked through the school to his class with his day school student’s class.
Later that day the second the sun set Drew opened the lid of his coffin sat up to see if anyone was awake. He peered over at Karl’s coffin his finely tuned senses let him know that Karl was sound asleep. It was good he was able to sleep when this was all going on. Drew wasn’t able to sleep. Every time he dozed off all he dreamt was flashes of Dillan being a vampire and slaughtering the other day school students. He recognised Mimi and Malcolm in his flashes but in the last one he had, he made sure he would not sleep for the rest of the night. He was walking up to Dillan’s dorm. All the lights were out but he could see fine. He approached her door and reached out for the handle. As his hand was about to grip it the door slowly creped open. Drew peered in scanning the surface of the room. It all looked normal till his eyes fell on Dillan’s bed. Dillan was on it feeding on someone. Her face buried in a girl’s neck. She looked up at him. Her face was covered in blood her fangs were baring her and her eyes were crimson. She growled at him and went back to feeding on the human. Drew was about to run over and stop her when the head of the person she was feeding on fell back. Drew was rooted to the spot. It was Sherry. Half of her face was covered in blood and her eyes were dead. Drew finally managed to move himself when he woke up and smashed his head off the top of his coffin. If the pain in his head couldn’t keep him awake the dream he just had would. He got up out of the coffin and slowly walked over to a chair. He slumped down in the chair and closed his eyes. It looked like he was asleep but he was actually checking on Dillan. He saw his mind travel up out of the cellar through Murdoch’s office up the stairs to the dorm’s he found Dillan’s room but stopped before going inside. He didn’t want to have a repeat of what he had in his dreams. He steadied his nerve and went through the door. He was relieved to see Dillan sitting on her bed talking to Mimi.
“So what did Murdoch say to you?” Mimi asked as she opened a tub of ice cream.
“I honestly have no idea.” Dillan said as she took a sthingy from Mimi and started to eat the ice cream.
“What do you mean?” Mimi asked between mouthfuls of ice cream.
“We were about to start talking about it then he changed the subject. And then he said it was time to get to class. It was weird it was as if he had a different reason for me to be there.
“Maybe he’s got the hots for you.”
“Please don’t let it be that, he’s a bit old for me.” Dillan laughed at this statement with Mimi.
They started talking about other things liked who on the class. Drew started to pay close attention to this to see the type of guy Dillan would be interested in. But to no avail. Dillan said she wasn’t interested in anybody in the class and it wasn’t a good time for a relationship in her life. This cause Drew a small piece of harm but it also meant she wouldn’t be going out with a guy for dinner and he’d end up being the dinner. This made Drew feel a bit more secure. With her and her friends well being. For the rest of the night until Dillan and Mimi went to bed Drew watched them all they did was eat and talk. To just an outside observer it would be boring but to Drew it was a good experience knowing what girls did and what they liked. Since he was turned in the years were women were only housewives. He had to know how to communicate. He knew that writing poetry wasn’t something every girl liked he knew Sherry liked it and Dillan did to but it was because of his writing Dillan was in this predicament in the first place. She had found Drew’s speech and offered to meet him in the library the night she ran into Karl. She had no idea what she was getting herself into. And Drew witnessed what had happened to her with his own eyes. He still couldn’t forget it no matter what. He believed it was his fault this had happened to Dillan. So he stayed with her that night they thought she might have turned and was watching her now to make sure she was never hurt again. Not long after Dillan and Mimi went to bed and were asleep Drew heard a familiar voice.
“Spying on your newest forbidden love are we Drew?”
Drew opened his eyes to see Marty standing in front of him with a large smirk on his face.
“What do you mean by that then Marty?”
“Answer my question with a question nice way to avoid answering.” Marty’s smirk was growing larger by the second.
“Just answer my question Marty. What did you mean by that?” Drew’s fists were clenched now and he was getting ready to move depending on Marty’s answer.
“What I mean is you always go for the forbidden love. First with your beloved Sherry and now with Dillan. You always want what you can’t have Drew it’s a fatal flaw for you.” Marty’s smile looked as though it was about to stretch off his face.
“Wanting what you can’t have, remind you of anyone?”
Now Drew was the one smiling and Marty was the one getting angry.
“You say I want what I can’t have and mock me for it this coming from the same man that is in love with a girl that wants me.”
“I’m warning you Drew you don’t shut up-“
“You’ll do what kill me. I don’t think there would be a chance in hell of Merrill falling for you if you did that.”
Drew finished his sentence as Marty used his telekinesis to throw a chair at him. Drew dodged it and went straight for Marty’s throat. Marty ducked him and tried to sweep his feet, Drew jumped out of the way and they both took a step back. They paced in circles both growling at each other. When this fight had ended one of them would be dead or mortally wounded. They both knew this and were determined it wasn’t going to be them that got the worst of it. They both took a step back and prepared to lunge at each other when someone finally spoke.
“What are you two doing?”
They both turned round to see Essie standing there with a look of disgust on her face and her blonde hair flaring helped emphasize this.
“This isn’t exactly the best time for you two to be fighting. Set aside your differences for now. You can always tear each other apart another time. We have to solve the whole Dillan situation out and it’s going to be hard one vamp down.”
After Essie’s short and sweet speech the two vampires still didn’t look like they were going to back down. Suddenly they heard the cellar door open and somebody walk down. They could see it was Dr. Murdoch and he was carrying a small jewellery box. They were wondering what could be the significance of a small box. It didn’t look valuable but Dr. Murdoch was making sure not to move his arms as he walked with the box in both hands out in front of him.
“What’s going on here?” He asked as he made it to the bottom of the cellar and saw Drew and Marty facing each other with red eyes and fangs and Essie nearly right in the middle of them.
“Oh nothing Dr. Murdoch” said Essie trying her best to lie and give Marty and Drew a signal to calm down.
They both saw her signal after a few seconds and went back to normal. They both were staring at each other until they saw Dr. Murdoch placing the box on the table as gently as possible.
“What’s with the box doc?” Marty asked after finally tearing his eyes away from Drew.
“You’ll see.” He replied.
Marty thought about asking another question but was hushed by Essie to keep his mouth shut.
“Is Merrill up yet?” The professor asked not taking his eyes off the box.
“Not yet.” Essie answered wondering why Dr. Murdoch was staring so intently at the box. “Do you want me to go wake her?”
“That’s alright we’ll wait till she gets up on her own. You should all have something to eat I’ll wait here.” Dr. Murdoch still didn’t even take his eyes off the box as he pulled out a chair and sat down.
The other’s thought they should stay but were all starting to feel hungry. So they all went to their blood packs and not long after they had started eating Karl joined them.
“Hey guys what’s up with Murdoch?” Karl asked as he helped himself to a blood pack.
“We have no idea, I was trying to find out but someone stopped me from finding out.” Marty emphasized his last few words as he turned to look at Essie.
“I thought he should tell us all at once.” Essie said glaring at Marty.
“Well we still have to wait on Merrill before the great unveiling of the secret of the little box.” Drew said this in a tone that sounded like he didn’t care but he probably wanted to know what was in the box more than the rest of them.
They all sat at the table with Dr. Murdoch waiting on Merrill getting up. They had finished their blood packs and were all staring at Murdoch staring at the box. They all wanted to know what was inside of it. Not too long after this Merrill finally came out of her room and saw everyone sitting at the table. They all looked up at her except Dr. Murdoch who kept his eyes on the box. The vampires breathed a sigh of relief.
“Did I miss something?” Merrill asked confused at what she saw in front of her.
“Not at all in fact we were waiting on you to begin.” Answered Murdoch still not taking his eyes off the box.
“Oh Okay” Merrill said as she pulled out a chair in between Marty and Drew. “What’s with the box Dr. Murdoch?”
“Good question Merrill if you hadn’t slept for so long we would know by now.” Marty said smartly. “So doc Merrill’s here now you want to tell us about the box?”
“Very well” Dr. Murdoch answered. “But it’s not the box that’s important, it’s what’s inside.” Dr. Murdoch opened the box and slowly removed the ring and showed it to the vampires.
“It’s a ring what’s so important about that?” asked Karl.
“How would you describe this ring to me Karl, its features I mean?”
“Gold with a ruby in it why?”
“What if I told you the stone in this ring is not red because it was red.”
The group of vampires were puzzled for a minute but then one by one they all caught the faint smell of blood coming from the ring. They then all realised it was blood in the ring.
“I’m guessing you all understand now. To the naked eye this looks like a normal ring but it is used to gather a small sample of blood.
“How does it work?” Merrill asked sounding absolutely fascinated.
“From the outside it looks like a normal ring with a diamond inset, but with this small spike one jab in someone’s arm collects a small sample of blood. But you have to be careful, before you collect the blood the stone is as durable as a normal diamond but after it is as fragile as a millimetre thin piece of glass.”
“Fascinating” Merrill looked like a young child in a toy store.
“So I’m guessing the blood is Dillan’s?” Asked Karl.
“Correct Karl and with a small test with the blood from this ring we will know if she is definitely a vampire.”
“What’s the test?” Asked Drew.
“I’ll show you in a minute but first I have to get the rest of the necessary equipment so wait here.” He then put the small ring back in the box as gently as possible. Then Dr. Murdoch slowly stood up making sure not to rock the table. He then proceeded to the exit of the cellar.
“Hey Doc I’ve got a question to ask you before you go.” Said Marty.
Dr. Murdoch turned back round to face Marty. “Yes marty what is it?”
“Why would you have a ring like that in the first place?”
Everybody else turned to Dr. Murdoch to hear his answer as far as Marty’s questions went this was a good one. They all wanted to know why he would have something like that in his possession and had he ever used it before or planned to use it on them later on in the experiment. But when he opened his mouth to give them an answer they’d love to hear he merely said.
“Oh no reason”
And continued to walk up to the exit of the cellar. The rest of them were left with their mouth’s hanging open thinking how he could justify that as an answer.
Not long later Dr. Murdoch returned carrying a large cardboard box. He set it down on a table next o the wall next to Drew’s dorm he then got Drew and Karl to lift it over next to the other table and not to drag it or bump the table because it could possibly crack the sample of Dillan’s blood. He thanked them for their assistance and began to put the contents of the box onto the larger table as gently as possible. The class watched as he placed the contents on the table. First he took out an electronic microscope which he gave the main plug of to Merrill and asked her to find somewhere to plug it in. He then took out a set of glass slides and then a set of electrical cables and last a small black cylinder. The vampires looked at the cylinder wondering what it was and when they had given up on working it out there selves they turned to Merrill to see if she could shed some light on the subject but she just looked at them and shook her head. When Dr. Murdoch was done emptying the contents of the box onto the table he flattened the cardboard box and put it in a corner of the room out of the way. He them asked Drew and Karl to move the smaller table back to its original position. When they were finished he sat down on the chair in front of the small jewellery box. He reopened it and took out the small ring again, then picked up one of the glass slides and put it down in front of him. The vampires lent in to see the next part Dr. Murdoch turned the ring upside down and tapped the back and the blood sample came out of the small spike and fell onto the glass slide. He then put the ring back into the jewellery box and closed it and gave it to Merrill who put it on a table out of the way expecting they wouldn’t need it again. Dr. Murdoch then stood up.
“We can be less cautious now, there’s nothing we can break anymore that’s of great value. But now Karl you’re the technical man around here.”
Karl nodded and said “As I said to Drew I’m a hi-tech guy in a low-tech basement.”
“Good” Dr. Murdoch said “can you give me a hand with this then?” Dr. Murdoch pointed to the large monitor on the wall that right now was turned off.
“Sure” Karl answered.
For the next five minutes Merrill, Drew, Marty and Essie waited in anticipation as they watched Dr. Murdoch and Karl. They started off feeling round the bottom of the monitor till they found a small compartment that revealed itself when you pushed on it. It was no bigger than two centimetres and had four small cylindrical plug-ins on it. After they had located this Dr. Murdoch took the electrical cables and plugged one side of them into the monitor. He then checked the microscope to make sure it was on and then plugged the other side of the cables into the side. Karl then realised what he was doing and took the remote on the table revealed the second display of controls and turned on the monitor. The other vampires were impressed they could see the surface of Dr. Murdoch’s finger underneath the microscope lens. He had displayed the picture on the monitor. Karl gave a short smile in triumph of putting this together.
“I thought this would be better than everyone fighting to look down the lens of the microscope.” Dr. Murdoch said with a smile.
The group of vampires were impressed with their teacher they thought he was a man who wasn’t up to terms on his technical jargon but this just proved he was.
“Now let’s begin the test.” Dr. Murdoch took a seat in front of the seat.
The group of vampires watched as Dr. Murdoch took the glass slide containing Dillan’s blood and placed it under the microscope lens. He then adjusted the magnifier to a higher magnification. The picture appeared on the screen of Dillan’s Blood cells.
“What are we looking at exactly” asked Marty.
“They look like healthy red blood cells to me Dr. Murdoch.” Said Merrill ignoring Marty’s stupidity.
“I know Merrill, now I was wondering if I could have a sample of blood from one of you?”
The group all took a step back from Dr. Murdoch none of them minded the site of blood but having a sample of their blood taking for a reason they didn’t know was something they weren’t sure they wanted to do.
“What do you need it for?” asked Essie who was now covering her arms.
“I’ll show you when I get a sample of someone’s blood.”
“Don’t take this the wrong way doc but there’s no way in hell I’m letting you jab me with that ring.” Marty said sounding defensive.
“Oh don’t worry I’m not going to use the ring I’ll use this.” From inside his jacket pocket Dr. Murdoch pulled out a small syringe.
“I’m still not doing it” Marty said as he took another step back.
“Fine I’ll do it” Drew said as he stepped forward and rolled up his sleeve.
Merrill watched Drew roll up his sleeve she could see he didn’t have the muscle definition of Karl but he was toned. They looked the kind of arms she’d like to be held in at night in her coffin as she slept.
Merrill wondered what the rest of Drew’s body looked like.
The group watched as r. Murdoch pushed the syringe into Drew’s arm and withdrew a small amount of blood. Drew then rolled up his sleeve and returned to his group.
“Thank you for doing that I know it sounds sad but I’m scared of needles.” Merrill said to Drew as he returned to the group.
“Don’t worry about it.” Drew said as he gave Merrill a warm smile.
Merrill suddenly felt hot and fluttery. Her heart rate was now that of a humans which was abnormally high for a vampire. She wanted to wrap her arms around Drew’s neck and kiss him passionately and hope he wouldn’t resist. But she restrained herself. She wanted to see why Dr. Murdoch wanted a sample of their blood and see the end of the experiment then she would focus on getting a chance to be alone with Drew.
“Thank you Drew” Dr. Murdoch said as he pushed the back of the syringe so the blood would go onto the glass slide and put it under the microscope lens.
“Now what is the difference in the look of Dillan’s blood and Drew’s blood?”
The class bent over and peered at the monitor. They could see no difference what so ever.
“They look exactly the same.” Merrill said after looking at the monitor the longest while everybody waited on her to answer Dr. Murdoch’s question.
“Your right Merrill they look exactly the same.” Dr. Murdoch said sounding quite proud of his student for getting the right answer.
The vampires all looked at each other. If human blood looked the exact same as vampire blood why did they get a sample of Dillan’s blood if it would be no help at all?
“The reason we needed Dillan’s blood and Drew’s is this.”
The vampires watched as Dr. Murdoch picked up the small cylinder and prepared to open it. He then turned to them and said “You should all take a step back and try not to take to many deep breaths.”
The vampires all took a step back and watched as Dr. Murdoch twisted the top off of the cylinder.
“This is very finely grounded granulated silver, you might want to make sure you don’t inhale this or you might lose a lung.”
The vampires all took a step back and put the jacket’s, shirts and hands over their mouths. They knew from Essie stabbing Marty with a dagger made of silver, that silver could do deadly damage if you were stabbed with it but inhaled would do a lot more severe damage and would probably last longer. They then watched as Dr. Murdoch took a small sample with a pair of tweezers from his jacket pocket and put it over the sample of Drew’s blood.
“Now this is what happens if silver comes in contact with human blood.” Dr. Murdoch then loosened his grip on the tweezers and the tiny granules fell into the blood sample.
The vampires then watched with horror not an actually scary scene the red blood cells in the sample looked as though they turned black and began what looked like dissolving.
When the cells were almost completely gone Dr. Murdoch turned to his students and said “Scary the first time you see it isn’t it.”
The class nodded in unison.
“That is what happens to vampire blood when it comes in contact with silver. Now human blood on the other hand it has almost no effect on. But Dillan’s blood......... that’s what we are here to find out.”
The class now understood the significance of the experiment. If Dillan’s blood cells reacted the same way to Drew’s then she was definitely a vampire in some way. But if it didn’t it meant there was just probably something wrong with the camera.
“Now shall we see the results now?”
The class nodded in unison again.
Once again they watched as Dr. Murdoch picked up a small amount of granules of silver with the tweezers and put Dillan’s blood sample under the microscope. Everybody in the breathed in deeply they afraid of what they might see when the silver touched the blood sample. If it showed no change then they would be fine there would be nothing to worry about. But if the sample reacted the same way as Drew’s did then what would they do next. They would probably have to notify the elders and that would most probably lead to the death of Dillan. They were all starting to shake the suspense was killing them. Finally Dr. Murdoch dropped the silver into the sample they all waited and held their breath to see if anything would happen. And nothing did.
“No sign of vampire DNA” as Dr. Murdoch said this he closed the cylinder containing the silver allowing his students to breathe again.
The vampires all cheered and whooped they were happy it was all over even Dr. Murdoch joined in the celebration Drew was hi-fiving Karl when Merrill came out of the blue and wrapped her arms around him.
Merrill wanted to kiss him so badly but thought this was not the best time. Right now contact with him was enough. She was smiling and laughing close to tears she could smell Drew as she was so close and never wanted to let go of him.
Drew was taken aback by Merrill hugging him but it was a time for celebration and he didn’t feel like stopping her that was when he realised something he was not going to make the same mistake again with Dillan as he did with Sherry. Dillan was human and he was vampire, it could never have worked out. She would meet the perfect guy of her kind and it hit him he had known the perfect girl for him of his own kind. It was Merrill she was not the most attractive girl but she was the nicest vampire you would ever meet. And Drew was lucky to have her wanting him above all others. Drew was about to ask Merrill to meet him later and talk about today and their relationship. He was about to try and break the vice like grip Merrill had locked onto the back of his neck with her arms when he saw the monitor in the wall. His smile fell he looked at the blood sample and saw that it had become darker in colour and the cells had slowly began to dissolve. Drew pushed Merrill away and got Dr. Murdoch’s attention.
“Dr. Murdoch look at the monitor” Drew pointed at the monitor.
Everybody stopped celebrating when Drew pushed Merrill off him and pointed at the screen. They couldn’t believe what they saw the nightmare still wasn’t over. But there was something peculiar about the sample it hadn’t completely dissolved the cells like it did last time and took longer to have any effect.
Dr. Murdoch stared at the monitor lost for words he then looked at the sample through the microscope but it was no use it was the exact same. He fell back into the chair next to him and stared at the ground.
“Dr. Murdoch what does this mean?” Merrill asked almost pleading.
Then Dr. Murdoch said the words they never thought they’d hear him say more than once.
“I honestly have no idea.”
“Hey Doc”
