I for one love this guy, he gives the show comic relief, and he's always stirring up trouble. And he's got an awesome voice too.

He's the VH equivalent of Spike, only more of a joker. Good fun but not entirely to be trusted. I'd quite like to get into his leather trousers I must admit .

Okay, I've got a question about Marty. In the third or fourth episode, the one where Drew goes into Shelley's mind, the young Sherry says to Drew "I can skip backwards. Wanna see?". Then, at the end of the episode, when Drew is talking to Merrill (who, incidentally, I depise), Merrill tells him that someone DID follow him in. The last shot of the show is Marty with a skipping rope saying "I can skip backwards, wanna see?" and then proceeds to do so. This obviously suggests that it was Marty who followed him in. Now, I'm not sure about the rest of you, but it seems to me that that sets up the fact "Oh, Marty can't be trusted." Do they ever expand on that in later episodes? I didn't get to see a few 'cause honestly, I just got so sick of Merrill.
Oh, and by the way, he is KINDA the Vampire High equivilant of Spike, but Spike, in my opinion, is WAY cooler. And also, Marty strikes me as the type of guy who would have been a jerk while he was human.
EDIT: Oh, and I didn't particularly like the blues song he sang, but I loved the way he just screamed at Merrill "HIT IT!"

When Marty uses Black Magic to "have his way with Essie" that reinforces the fact that he can not be trusted when left to his own devices. Although when the group stand together to safe Drew after the death of Sherry he is more a member of the group then ever before.
Also... how can you not like Merrill, she is the smart and quiet one but when she got that evil streak it was just perfect TV!

They don't specifically mention the Dreamsliding again in the series, which annoys the Hell out of me because the premise itself was such a good idea, plus they really missed a trick with the Marty thing. To be honest I wonder how many people even picked up on that throw away line.
I like Merrill, but as with most of the other characters she wasn't developed enough.
Yes, Spike is way cooler, but I'm not sure if Marty was always a jerk, just from some of the stuff he says in later episodes.

I also think the soft side to Marty that we see when he goes over the kill he mosts regrets is very sweet.

Yeah, that is sweet, and yes, they did miss a great opportunity.
Anyway, the reason I don't like Merrill is because she's TOO goody-goody, and yet, she's EXTREMELY selfish. Fair enough, I never liked the whole Drew-Shelley thing, but Merrill had to understand that when we guys are in love, there's no detering us. Also, when her rat escapes, she chides Essie on a fear of rats. That's not fair. I have an EXTREME fear of clowns, and I will punch anyone in the face if they make fun of me for it. A phobia's not something anyone can help.
But I'm now REALLY annoyed that they didn't expand on the dreamsliding thing. Now I'm gonna HAVE to write a fanfiction about it.

Well we do have a fan fiction section so that would be great to read if you pursue it...

marty and essie are a bad idea. it's never work, they're too different
essie and karl would work cos he's be her bit of rough
essie and drew i'm not sure about. he's too melancholic and introspective to interest her i think.
essie and murdoch, well, that's just be silly ;D

Just a lil personal analysis of Marty's character. Feel free to correct anything you think I might be a bit off-base about, kk? Just going off the evidence in the series ( ;D Heck, thats all we can really use, right) I get the feeling that he has hidden depths - more than he lets on. Marty's been around the block a few times and probably in some pretty rough neighbourhoods, at that. When Marty arrives, the very first thing he does is to start pushing boundaries - both with his fellow students and with the experiment itself. He needs to know where he stands and how far each vampire will let him go before they push back. If you know the limits, you can find the centre of a person and find out what makes 'em tick. He achieves this by a combination of observation and conversation. His humour is his protection against the world in general. If he can cut someone to ribbons with a razor wit or his mean streak, he finds they'll leave him alone. He does this with everyone he meets so as not to be hurt - deep down, he's too sensitive for his own good. Every put down from the others hurts and dents his armour a little more - watch his face, 'cause he doesn't hide his feelings half as well as he thinks he does. He's actually met his mirror image in Merrill. They represent two sides of the same coin. As boisterous as Marty is, Merrill is as restrained. But the one thing they both have in common is they they both feel lonely. Marty combats this by teasing and sometimes trying to bully the others while Merrill tries to win them over with charm and kindness. Marty spots this early on and doesn't seem to be as harsh on Merrill unless she starts it. (In "Rats" she all but accuses him of murdering her pet rat, so he lets his sarcasm flow in defence.) He's also tougher than he makes out, I reckon. Yeah, I know Drew's bested him in nearly every confrontation, but I think Marty may have been cutting him some slack. Well, okay, the first time, Marty whipped both Karl and Drew with chairs. Gawd I love telekinesis!! ;D The second time was when Sherry was sick - Marty knew Drew was distraught about her illness and maybe he underestimated what Drew might do to be by her side. He was trying to do the right thing at the time. The third time was when he became Merrill's knight in shining armour when Drew was hell-bent upon, ahem, having his wicked way with her. He seemed to figure that if Drew was attacking him, Merrill would be safe and could get away. All in all, Marty strikes me as a street kind of vampire, he's see the nastier side of life and its scarred him. Or scared him? The others seem to have had a more privileged existence - or safer in some ways, at least. Heck, all of them have demons to face. Marty's seen the dangers (maybe experienced them judging by his extreme hatred of Marian Hackett - there's definitely an untold story there!) and doesn't want to again. Ooh, I gotta stop waffling, even though I'm not done yet! I think I love character analysis too much, don't I? *laughs* Feel free to dissect the theory! 'Lissa.

I agree with you, 'Lissa. I love the first part of that episode where Marty is talking to Merrill about 'loving the one you're with', trying to get her to go out with him. It really showed the softer part of him. Then when he let Merrill drink his blood in 'Lost Weekend', that showed he's willing to do anything for her. Then he's got so much of the bad boy attitude, I love that part of him, too. He's the most complex of them all, I think.
