Another vampire/private detective show! Whoo-hoo!
The basic plot is: Mick St John (Alex O'Loughlin) is a vampire private eye. He rescued Beth Turner (now a reporter), played by Sophia Myles, when she was kidnapped as a child and has since been 'looking out for her', without her knowing.
In the first ep, a murder victim is discovered with vampire bite-like wounds to her neck. Beth's & Mick's separate investigations lead them to a college study group/vampire cult, and they collaborate a little. Mick wants to stop the bad vampire press (any vampire press is a bad thing) and Beth wants a killer story.
Only the first ep has aired so far (Living, Tuesdays), but it seems pretty good. There were a couple of dodgy special effects scenes (although super-fast running never looks good, does it?), but on the whole it was very good. Alex O'Loughlin is charming and likeable, and Sophia Myles isn't annoying at all as an ambitious reporter with bigger dreams than a sleazy 'entertainment' tv slot.
In particular it's nice to see a few of the major vampire lore elements get thrown out the window: 'garlic is tasty on pizza, throw holy water on me and I get wet'. Sunlight isn't too much of a problem, so we're not stuck with night-time only action either.
Maybe I won't add the DVD release to my shopping basket as quick as I did with Blood Ties (that got removed almost as quick as it went in) although I'm very tempted, and I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high. But it'd be nice to see a good vampire-based drama at last - Angel seems like such a long time ago.

I really love this show. I too am watching it on Living and I'm finding that I can't wait for each episode to air, I wish I could just watch them all at once and kill the suspense! lol I really think that Alex O'Laughlin lights up the screen when he's on, and he's supported brilliantly by Sohpia Myles and also Jason Dohring, who both add their own bit of colour to the show. What I also like about Moonlight is that the issues Mick St John faces (at least up to episode 2...hehe) have been rooted in human evil rather than focusing entirely on supernatural doings, which is a good, modern take on this genre I think. Episode 2, 'Out of the Past', was particularly outstanding - but then, when you have David Greenwalt, Angel's co-creator, writing it it's gonna be good. I'm so happy that it's being renewed in the US for more episodes too post-writer's strike, which means more on Living TV over here! Yaay! ;D The way I see it, this show can only get better. I'm definitely pre-ordering the DVDs...lol

First off, I'm really sorry not to have been online to reply earlier, 'cos Tuesday's episode repeats over the weekend - you could have caught ep 2. Sorry!
Episode 3 airs on Tuesday. I would totally say watch it. Of course I'm slightly obsessed at the moment, so I'm not the most impartial source. I've stopped myself from watching the whole of episode 2, 'cos an entire week's wait for the next ep is too d**n torturous!
But anyway: it seems like there are no major points that you can't catch up on right away, especially as we're so early in the season. Also, episode 3 could be a good place to come in a little late, 'cos Mick is going to have to do a bit of explaining to Beth.
I've just been reading that the show has gone through several changes - writers, producers, cast - and it's looking to be on shaky ground. I just hope it hangs on as long as it can, then we get a DVD release with some tasty features to sink our teeth into.
I also really like that Mick's cases are, so far, mortal based, but that he uses his vampire-ness to give him the edge. I guess it gives the show more of a feel of him trying to exist in the 'real world' while very much not being a member of that world himself.
All in all, extreme coolness. There's something about Alex O'Loughlin. His stillness is fascinating to watch. He's the kind of actor who could have a bit part and stand in the background and still command attention in the scene. I also noticed that I managed to spell his name wrong in my original post, so I gotta go hit 'edit'. :::hangs head in shame:::

It may be on shaky ground be remember so was Angel's first season with cast changes and stuff and then went on to be a five season success so lets hope for Moonlight!!!

Apparently there was only 12 episodes made before the writers strike, and there's no word yet on whether they're making any more

aah well, CBS are actually running another 4 episodes (I think it's 4 anyway) sometime mid-May, so we'll at least be able to watch til the end of season 1. Hooray!!
The question is if they'll run a season 2...but I reckon they probably will as I believe CBS have been getting quite good viewing figures for the show so far ;D

It seems Moonlight is getting its premiere tonight at 10pm in Canada, either on CBS or another channel... Gah! I forgot the name of the other channel my Top Secret source mentioned! I've not seen any of this show but hopefully it'll get a rerun at some point and I can try to record it. Thankies for the glowing reviews gang! It sounds like this might be right up my alley. 'Lissa.

I'm not sure just yet where to pick up the boxset, I think they're waiting until all the episodes are being made. I really think that there's a really good shot for this show. I love the new spin on the vampire. I think this one is going to pull through and might be the reason that Blood Ties was passed over. I think that maybe the networks felt there was room for only one vamp show on tv and this one out over Blood Ties.
