Marty fans unite! Woooh! *lol*[glow=red,2,300]Possible SPOILERS AHEAD[/glow] So if you haven't seen most or all of the episodes, please think about not reading on. I have a question 'bout the cute lil bloodsucker. Other than the fact that he was prowling the killing fields of WW1 for "easy pickings" in 1918, has anyone noticed any clues as to the timeline of his making? Because Marty's confession of his awakening to kill 19 homeless people in one night in the final episode suggests he was made during peacetime. And his method of killing seemed too smooth during his flashback to 1918 to have been that of only a four or five year old vampire. Though, granted, thats an awful lot of nights, but he had confidence, like he's been doing this for a long, long time. Swagger, almost. Any takers? 'Lissa

Hi everyone! I had to join the forum when I saw a topic devoted to Marty! I'm loving the folks at the Horror Channel right now - for giving me the opportunity to see this show again.
I've gotta say Marty is by far the coolest character. I think a pretty good clue as to his real character is the start of episode "Rats". Merrill storms in (assuming the worst of the poor guy) and accuses him of eating her rat. When she walks in, Marty is sucking his thumb. He looks self conscious, then immediately puts the tough guy front on, being sarcastic. Merrill, of course, being so wrapped up in herself, doesn't notice.
To me that kinda shows that all the tough guy image, his insulting and sarcastic comments and trouble making are all a front. He's keeping people away because he's afraid they won't like the real him if they saw him. So he gives them a 'him' they're sure to dislike and that puts him in control.
There is something so odd about getting into Vampire High characterisation analysis. It seems such a shallow (but downright entertaining) show on the surface!
I really like Joris Jarsky's performance as a whole. He looks like he's having a really good time, hamming it up, and some of the physicalities of his performance are really nicely observed. Theatre training?
I think the conversation about the vampires' final meal as a mortal may give a clue as to Marty's timeline - the 'glass of warm goats milk' thing. Then being in Europe during the war, like he's been there for ages, watching the times change. I guess I could picture him in a tiny European village, hearding goats in the mountains. Kinda just made him sound like 'Heidi'. Oops!
Anyway, Marty is, without a doubt, the man!

In regards to Marty being European, in the speech he gives Merrill about his first night as a vampire, he talks about being by the canal in Manchester, which immediately makes me think that he means the Manchester in Britain, as it is well known for it's busy canals due to the large amount of industry that went on there during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Assuming that Marty was around 18 years old when he was turned, and we know he was a vampire during WW1, he must have been born in 1900 at the very latest, so we can safely assume that he is at least 101 years old in 2001.
I think about this way too much. That's it, I'm starting a thread discussing all the vampire's ages, it's the only way.

*lol* I've been watching VH on The Horror Channel and I noticed something I've never noticed before, a hilarious in connection with one of my favourite movie franchises. At the beginning of "The Withering", while Murdoch is talking about time being a burden to vampires, a part of the montage shows Marty is playing with a knife, a la Bishop the android in Aliens! Either he likes the movie or he's more bored than ever! *lol* It could explain his gleeful taunting of Essie as she suffers a bad withering. Pure, malicious, yet infinitely entertaining boredom. I just watched that episode and you're absolutely right! He is sucking his thumb! And he's obviously nervously resisting the urge to do so again later in the episode when he and Drew are outside the library. Marty is really not as tough and confident as he wants the others to think he is sometimes. 'Lissa.

Yeah, thats so true too. They all have aspects of their real personalities revealed over time during the show, which is better than all at once. Its great that its so very subtly done, too, which is a credit to all the actors and actresses involved.
