Oh man, I can't tell you how much I love this show - but I'm gonna try!
The basic plot is: the show is a spin off from The Practice, which ran for 8 seasons. Set in the Boston office of the law firm Crane, Poole & Schmidt, it's about the lawyers who work there (including Alan Shore and Tara Wilson from The Practice), the cases they work on and how their private lives intersect with their business relationships. Does that sound boring? Well it isn't!
The cases they take on are often pretty wacky, Denny Crane has mad cow, Alan Shore is...well, he's Alan Shore.
The writing is fantastic. Alan Shore's closing arguments are sheer brilliance, and the story lines manage to be funny, moving and compelling all at once.
It stars James Spader, William Shatner, Candice Bergen, Rene Auberjonois and Mark Valley, with season to season variations (Monica Potter, Lake Bell and Rhona Mitra in season 1; Parker Posey in season 2, Julie Bowen from season 2 onwards; Craig Bierko and Constance Zimmer in season 3, among others).
I've been a James Spader fan for 12 years or so, but I haven't been particularly keen on William Shatner for a while, so I steered clear of the show until recently. The fact that Craig Bierko is in season 3, and Living were repeating the show at 3am made me finally have a go at watching it again (some odd camera work had put me off the first time). Best thing I did all year, tv wise! I got all 3 seasons off Amazon and am eagerly awaiting season 4 on tv.
Fabulous, fabulous stuff. I actually like William Shatner again (alright, I admit it! I fancied Captain Kirk!). The scene in the season 2 & 3 opening credits of James Spader walking down the corridor... mmm, gets me every time!
It's lines like:
"I'm giving notice. I believe 2 weeks is standard. Now step aside before I push you to the ground and go to the bathroom on you"
And scenes like:
Alan developing 'word salad' due to anxiety and speaking nonsense in court,
that keeps a smile on my face, even at work. It's simply that good.
