As a part of an all-consuming Doctor Who kick, I purchased a few Doctor Who-actor related DVDs. This BBC series was one of them.
I believe it was shown in 2004, and stars David Morrissey as arcade owner Ripley Holden, Sarah Parish as his wife, Natalie, and David Tennant as DI Peter Carlisle. Ripley has opened a new arcade (in Blackpool, as you'd expected), and has plans to expand it into a casino-hotel. Then one morning, when he opens up, he finds a dead body on the floor of the arcade. Carlisle is the officer in charge of the investigation.
It's not just about the investigation, though. It's about love and loss and family. And it's a musical, kinda. The cast regularly break into song and dance routines, but sing under the track, so they're kinda singing/lip synching. The whole cast is wonderful (but I'm biased for Mr Tennant, of course!).
It's a 2 disc set and costs about £12. I purchased it without seeing it, and was a bit worried that I wouldn't love it. But I highly recommend it. I've had 'Shall I Stay' by Gabrielle in my head for 3 days straight now, and that particular section of the series will not get old for a long, long time.

Yeah. Odd. Kinda. My thought during the first routine was 'What have I bought now?!' By the end of episode one, though, it's completely normal. The songs are great too, like 'Cupid', 'Ooh La La', 'The Gambler', 'The Boy with the Thorn in His Side'. Some I'd heard, and some I hadn't. But they're all fabulous.
Good stuff. Honest!

For anyone who might be interested, the sequel to Blackpool, "Viva Blackpool" is on TV tonight at 9:10-10:40pm on BBC1. David Morrissey returns as Ripley Holden (I'm reading off the info screen on the TV here! Hehe!) but there's no mention of David Tennant returning. Since I haven't seen the original, I can't say whether thats a surprise or not, but I'll tape it and have a watch later... 'Lissa

I watched it and personalley really enjoyed it, the singing and dancing was just so cool and fitted the show. I thought they all acted well and it was a brilliant storyline aswell. I think I will get the first series on DVD now after watching this sequel!

Rockergirl, you'll get along here swimmingly if youre a fan of Dr Who as well! *lol* Timeladyshayde and RaRaRhade are both huge fans, among the many here. In fact, theres a discussion further down the TV shows page dedicated to Dr Who that you might want to join. You might know whats going on better than me 'cause I don't watch it much. 'Lissa.

I was so thrilled when I saw Blackpool was returning to BBC. David Morrissey is so fabulous, he fills the void left by the absent original cast members all by himself. If it had been a series rather that a one of episode, I think the absences would be considerably more glaring. But as it was a single episode, I wasn't too upset by the absence of the rest of the original cast (particularly Mr Tennant ). After the 6 episodes of the original series, just the one seems kinda like a cruel taunt - I want more Ripley! If you enjoyed this show, it's definitely worth grabbing a copy of the series. This single ep was like a revisit with some old friends - just a brief catch-up. I'll have to get my copy out and watch it all over again now. Oh darn, the hardship of it all. ;D _____ Rhade, Rhade!
