I know it has been a long time since I posted on this page but I feel like I have to finish it
I am open to feedback so have a read and let me know what you all think.
“What are you talking about?” Essie asked not believing what her teacher had just said.
“I suppose none of you have been watching the monitors in the last few hours then?” Dr. Murdoch asked already knowing the answer.
The four vampires looked at each other and shook their heads at each other and all turned back to Dr. Murdoch and all shook their heads again. They could all sense that what Dr. Murdoch was going to say was going to be something that made them wish they had been watching the monitors earlier. Merrill clutched Drew's hand tightly and Drew put his arm around her.
“I was just paid a visit by Marian Hackett from the BPDA. I trust you all remember her, from last time?”
The class had not forgotten. Merrill looked at the floor still feeling a bit of guilt that her recklessness had nearly got all of them killed. Drew squeezed her arm tightly to reassure her. It still did not give her any closure. She finally looked back up to Dr. Murdoch putting on a brave face as she raised her head for the rest to see, this way she would not seem as timid and weak she thought. But when any of the vampires looked into her deep blue eyes they always saw timid, shy Merrill the smartest girl in class, who would never think to do anyone harm.
“Yeah we remember her, what did the skank want?” Essie asked.
“She said she was doing a routine check of the school as the last time she was here her equipment picked up vampire activity.”
Merrill's head once again fell to the floor. She felt the wave of guilt wash back over her and carry her out to the sea of depression. Suddenly she was thrown a life raft as Drew whispered something inaudible to the others into her ear. She looked back up into the face she adored, his brooding features along with his trimmed sideburns, he was everything Merrill wanted. But she still could not shake the feeling that it was her fault for her mistakes a few months back that had now put Marty in danger.
“Did she find anything?” Merrill asked hoping for Murdoch to say no and that she would never bother them again.
“No she didn't find anything to do with any vampire activity.” Dr. Murdoch replied.
Merrill breathed a sigh of relief.
“Not in the school anyway.”
Merrill's sigh fell short.
“What you talking about doc?” asked Karl.
“Ms Hackett said that she couldn't find anything inside the school but she also thought it would be a good idea to have a look through the town nearby just to make sure there was no vampires lingering in the area. And we all know there happens to be a vampire in that area.”
“Marty” Drew said staring at the ground.
The rest of the group all said the same name in their heads. Marty, the joker who they had all come to know but not necessarily love. He was always good for a joke with Essie and Karl and could have a decent conversation every once in a blue moon with Drew, but then there was Merrill it was obvious to her that Marty had feelings for her and she couldn't get rid of the thought scratching at the back of her brain and pulling on her heart muscles that she could also have feelings for him, but she didn't dare say it in open conversation. The cellar in which she lived wasn't exactly known for having good relationships. Her and Drew were only together a few weeks and everything was going great but that was the same with Essie and Karl until Karl decided to try and take their relationship to the next level. He wanted himself and Essie to make the 'pledge' and swear there love for each other would last for eternity. He thought that it was the correct thing to do, sadly even though he believed that Essie was the one he would spend the rest of eternity with, she did not feel the same way. Seconds after they made the pledge and sealed it with a kiss. Karl became paralysed. It was only after they had the pledge had been undone did he have full control of his limbs again but him and Essie never did look at each other the same way again.
“What can we do Dr. Murdoch?” asked Merrill.
“You four will stay here and do nothing until I return.”
The vampires could not believe their teachers response, Marty was in immortal danger and he wanted them to sit by and do nothing. Even though they all despised Marty at times they still did not want him to die. They all thought that Dr. Murdoch could use their help and they could find Marty quicker this way but they all knew what his response would be. One of them might be caught by a member of the BPDA and killed, then the experiment would probably be abandoned by the elders in fear of it being compromised by the BPDA or worse the Fury.
“But Dr. Murdoch what can you possibly do?” Asked Merrill.
“I'll do what I must to ensure the safety of this experiment and its participants.”
“Yeah I know you would do whatever it takes of course, but I mean what if you are seen rescuing Marty and Miss Hackett identifies you. The BPDA would be back on your doorstep with you in handcuffs searching this entire building head to toe. And the odds are they wouldn't believe a technical glitch twice in a row as a coincidence when they got near the cellar.” Merrill finished her argument with reason and emotion the best way to end an argument she thought. Even though it was genuine the emotion she was showing, she remembered reading in a book to end an argument with a look of deep emotion.
“Merrill's right Dr. Murdoch.” said Karl “If anything happens to you I wouldn't be able to forgive myself, you've allowed me to stay here even after all the trouble I've caused and Marty might be a pain in the fangs, but the cellar wouldn't be the same without him” Karl finished with a small smile.
“I can't believe I am actually saying this, but I agree with Karl.” said Drew.
The other vampires were surprised at what Drew had just said but did nothing to show it as there were larger matters at hand. They all turned to Murdoch and all gave him the same look of absolute determination that with or without his permission they were going to help Marty.
“Everyone think about this rationally. Marion Hackett and possibly more BPDA agents are at this point in time looking for vampires not too far from here with top of the line equipment and you think it is a good idea for you to leave the most secure and safe place within miles?” Dr. Murdoch was practically begging them not to leave. He knew that there was no chance he could stop all of them on his own. He managed to subdue Karl one night when he tried to attack him but Karl was weak due to the fact he had been fed blood devoid of all the nutrients he needed. Taking on a fully functioning and determined vampire would be significantly more difficult but taking on four would be a death wish.
“I must protect this experiment...it is the task I was given and I will see it through till the end” Dr. Murdoch said with his stern voice that every vampire in the cold dark cellar knew they could not argue with.
One by one all of their heads fell to the ground joining Merrill, they appeared as if they were already mourning Marty at his funeral if they would even be allowed to have one for him.
“...but I cant do this on my own....”
Every vampires head shot back up to see Dr. Murdoch standing with almost a look of defeat on his face.
“ I will need one of you to come with me, Im an old man and not as fast as I need to be for this situation. But it will have to be someone that I trust and the rest of you believe will do the right thing if need be.”
Merrill kept her stare fixed on Dr. Murdoch as he said those words to the group when all of a sudden his eyes met hers, his warm kind eyes looked at her and she could do nothing but look back and wait. Even though Merrill had the power to read everyone around hers minds at that point in time she did not need that talent, she could tell that at that moment there was more than one pair of eyes fixed upon her....there was four.
