VH2 Ep8 – Hell Hath No Fury
WARNING: This episode contains passages of a sexual nature, please DO NOT read if you feel you will be offended.
Merrill studied by candle light giving resonance to the period romance novel she was reading. The day students curfew had just been imposed and the library was quiet and peaceful. The young adult looked up from her book and rested her cheek against her hand propped up by the elbow that gently rested on the table. A small smile spread across her lips as she felt the presence of another in the room.
“You shouldn’t be here, curfew has only just been imposed; there might be day students still around.” She said gently, not bothering to turn her head to look at the intruder, moving through the shadows behind her. She felt her long dark hair being swept aside by a cool hand, and the warmth of his breath as he tenderly started to kiss her neck.
“Marty, don’t. Someone might see you.” Merrill whispered as she tried to suppress the passion rising within her.
“Who cares,” he answered whispering into her ear. Merrill turned round and looked up in to Marty’s eyes, filled with lust. She stood up intent on walking away, but Marty caught her lips with his in a kiss. Merrill allowed herself to get caught up in the moment, edging backwards to sit on the library desk, her book sliding to the floor. Merrill felt his hand caress her body, and softly allowed herself a brief glance into his mind.
Marty felt the delicate hand push against his chest, and the movement away of the lips that he was trying to possess. Opening his eyes, he saw Merrill looking at him seriously.
“What?” He pouted, hurt by her actions.
“We shouldn’t.”
“Wha...” Marty began to repeat himself, then realised she must have read the thoughts he was obviously projecting, “Oh come on Merrill, what’s wrong?” Marty changed his tone to a more seductive style, leaning in and whispering sensuously, “I want you, you want me, and it’s not like either of us are virgins.” Marty tried to resume his kiss.
“Marty. No.” Merrill said firmly, moving away from him and towards the library door.
“Why not?” Marty yelled out, frustration evident in his voice.
“It’s just not right.” She said resolutely, removing herself from the situation before she lost control of herself.
Marty followed Merrill as she walked out of the library, across the common room and into Murdoch’s office.
“Ah come on.” He whined at her.
In the shadows a figure watched the scene intently. She had listened to the conversation in the library, and had seen how the girl had foolishly pushed away the gorgeous guy trying to get close with her. Mimi moved out from her hiding place and quickly ascended the stairs to her dorm room, a smile fixed on her face.

The vampire is an instinctual creature, acting only on their impulses and desires. My vampires‘ability to control their blood lust is increasing however they must also learn which instincts to control and which ones they can listen too, in order to remain balanced.

Karl repeatedly tossed his football up with one hand and then caught it with the other, moving absent-mindedly into his dorm. The presence of Marty lying in his coffin, staring up at the ceiling caught him a little off guard.
“Hey, thought you’d be off somewhere with Merrill.” He told his fellow vampire.
“Me too.” Marty answered grumpily.
“What’s up?” The young vampire asked, setting down the football on the nearby chair.
“I’m a horny vampire with seemingly no chance of getting laid, that’s what’s up, or not as the case may be.” The disgruntled vampire practically shouted.
“Oh, so you and Merrill haven’t...”
“No.” The answer was short, sharp and definite.
“Oh,” Karl paused then, “I just thought that by now...Essie and I...”
“I don’t want to know Karl,” The irritation sounded in Marty’s voice.
“Sorry, I’m just surprised.” The jock vampire shrugged.
“Yeah well, Merrill ain’t Essie.” Marty held his breathe hoping that Karl hadn’t realised the meaning of his words.
“What’s that suppose to mean?” Karl asked crossing his arms against his chest; an accusing tone in his voice, as his mind slipped back to when Marty had put Essie under a love spell. His mind boggled with thoughts of what Marty was implying. Marty remained dumb on the subject and hoped that Karl would too.
Drew moved into the dorm interrupting the tension that was rising in the room. Marty silently thanked the stars for his good fortune bringing an end to the conversation.
“Hey.” Drew muttered, “What’s going on?”
“Marty’s having trouble with Merrill.” Karl said looking around at his fellow vampire.
“What have you done now?” Drew said accusingly in a typical big brother fashion.
“Nothing!” Marty said annoyed by the fact he was once again the culprit where in fact he was the victim for once. “Why am I always the bad guy?”
“Because you are!” Drew countered.
“So the guys not getting any and...” Karl began to explain the situation.
“Hey Big Guy,” Marty interjected, “this ain’t the locker room with your jock mates discussing your fantasy sex lives you know.”
Drew raised an eye brow at the scene before him, uncertain what to say. There had always been guy talk through the centuries but in the current era talk was far more free and graphic, something that neither he nor Marty were used to being born in the ages of old. However, what he did know was that Merrill was old fashioned and a romantic at heart, and romance from a century ago was something he was good at and it was always good to have the upper hand over Marty. Drew sat himself down with a coy smile.

The dinning room hummed with the sound of waking students, eating their breakfasts. Mimi sat alone contemplating her course of action.
“You’re a lot happier than I’ve seen you in a while sis.” Zach said breaking her concentration as he sat down next to his sister. Mimi smiled at him. “What’s happened?”
“I’ve got a plan.” She said confidently.
“We’re not talking Marty here are we? Give it a rest, I know he and Merrill are an unlikely couple, but they seem really into each other.” Zach said between mouths of a toasted bagel.
“Ah but she’s not really that into him, she’s not giving him what he needs, so he’ll be sure to break up with her. Especially when he finds out what else is on offer.” Mimi said her eyes narrowing as her plan formed in her mind, a sly grin on her lips.
“Dad will be so proud.”

Essie lifted the lid of her coffin slightly and peered out through the gap. She was unsurprised to see Merrill awake. The vampiress had been out of sorts all night, as if trying to make a big decision, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out that she and Marty had had a disagreement. Now she was sitting on their dorm chair pretending to read, but obviously deep in thought, she hadn’t turned a page in the last ten minutes. The royal vampire sighed as she lifted the lid up fully drawing Merrill’s attention.
“Must be some book if it’s keeping you awake during the day.” Essie stated. Merrill slightly blushed as she shut the book.
“I wasn’t really reading.”
“I know.” The blonde rested her chin on her arms that draped the rim of her coffin. “So I take it all is not well in paradise?” Merrill stayed quiet, casting her eyes to the floor.
“It’s just...I don’t know,” she stuttered not answering Essie’s question.
“With Drew it was all dreamy and perfect, and with Marty it’s not?” Essie offered her the answer.
“Something like that.” Merrill admitted.
“Drew was far from perfect Merrill, he was only perfect in your eyes because it was all in your mind.” Merrill nodded silently as her peer delivered the harsh reality of the situation.
“A bit of advice,” Essie continued, “Perhaps you should just go with what feels right, what you want to do instead of what your head tells you is the correct thing to do.”
“I always do what feels right and what I want.” The brunette argued.
“Yeah right Merrill, I believe you, but it wouldn’t hurt you to let loose once in a while.” Essie said dropping her lid back into place. Merrill got up from the chair and walked over to her own coffin, pausing to look at herself in the mirror. Merrill gasped at her reflection, the vampire in the glass looked so much like her, but it wasn’t her. The Merrill in the reflection had red eyes and a mean taunting look on her face.
“So then sweet Merrill, didn’t it feel good kissing him?” The voice that sounded so much like her own emanated from the mirror. “The oh so virtuous goody goody with the resident bad boy. Did it feel good making Drew’s head spin, getting revenge for Sherry? How about staking a claim on Marty before that human got her claws into him? Good on you for not letting history repeat itself. Did it feel good breaking her heart just as Sherry broke yours?”
“I...I,” Merrill stuttered at the face in the mirror. She swallowed and gathered her thoughts. “You may be part of me, but I don’t have to listen to you. I don’t have to be you.” She turned her back on the mirror, but she still heard the wicked laughter echoing in her mind.
***
“Marty!” Merrill cried out as the lid of her coffin was lifted without warning startling the half asleep vampire.
“I just thought I’d wake you, you slept in.”
“I didn’t sleep well.” Merrill groaned as she sat up.
“Oh,” Marty said a touch of regret in his voice; he cleared his throat, uncomfortable with the silence that was brewing. “What’s with the cover over the mirror?”
“Don’t ask.” Merrill said shaking her head, knowing that he wouldn’t believe her.
“I got you this.” Marty said with a coy smile, handing her a white rose.
“Thank you, Marty.” Merrill said. The conversation entered another pause.
“Look I’ve got to head upstairs,” Marty burst out breaking the silence; he registered the puzzled look on Merrill’s face, “Me and Es swapped day student bonding nights, but you want to meet me in the library, just after curfew? Let me make up for last night?” Merrill nodded slowly.
***
Marty ran his finger across the books in front of him; he was in no mood to be doing homework tonight. A book title caught his attention and grabbing it he returned to his desk. He sat down with his book, and opened it, but he eyes surveyed the room, instead of the pages. The vampire sighed inwardly as he watched Nick hitting on a blonde girl on the table across the way, and let his eyes drift to the clock on the wall, noting the time and counting the hours until curfew was in place.
“Checking up on him?” Essie whispered into Merrills’ ear as she walked up behind her friend.
“No.” Merrill answered her tone defensive, as she dropped the remote to the CCTV on the table, the picture still on Marty in the library. “I’m just wondering why you and he swapped nights.”
“So am I. Maybe he’s got something romantic planned.” Essie stood as if in thought, “But then again this is Marty we’re talking about.” She shrugged then noted Merrill’s serious expression. “Oh come on Merrill, have a bit of fun, get in touch with your wild side, let yourself go with the flow; you never know you may end up enjoying yourself for once.” Essie hoped that the message would slowly filter through.
“I do enjoy myself.” Merrill argued. Essie gave Merrill a sceptical look and wondered whether she would ever accept herself.
“Being good is great Merrill, but when it starts to make you unhappy, perhaps it time to loosen the reigns a bit. Trust yourself that letting go a little doesn’t mean losing all control. You can find a middle ground you know.”
***
“That doesn’t look like homework.” Mimi said sliding into the chair on the opposite side of the desk to Marty. He looked up from the page he was reading, “Who would have thought Murdoch would have a book in here about motorcycles.” Marty smiled. “You got one?” The human asked.
“I used to have one, a while back anyway.” Marty answered a slight smile on his face as he remembered the 60’s and his adventures on his triumph trackmaster bike. “You like ‘em?”
“My Dad has a couple of Harley’s.” Mimi boasted, not one to normally allude to her father’s fame but every now and again it came in handy. Marty raised his eyebrows at the girl in front of him, flirting with her smile. “So, erm, I was expecting to find Essie down here tonight, where is she?” The human was pretending not to be interested in him; Marty returned her smile with his own. The wicked voice of Marty’s mind echoed through his conscious suggesting that maybe he could use this human to make Merrill jealous, take his revenge on her for turning him down.
“Essie couldn’t make it tonight, so I thought I’d get an extra tut session in.” He answered, looking intensely at Mimi, leaning in slightly over the table.
“And why would you want to do that?” Mimi asked seductively, leaning in over the table decreasing the gap between their faces. Marty hesitated, his smile diminishing somewhat, no he couldn’t do this to Merrill; this wasn’t the way he would get her to love him.
“I’d better get on with I disagreeignment.” The vampire pulled away and stood up walking back over to the bookshelves.
“Hmm,” Essie looked at Merrill, her frown conveying her thoughts at the scene they were observing on the monitor. “He walked away Merrill,” Essie said quietly yet seriously, “I think you made an honest man out of him.”
“Maybe.” Merrill stayed focus on the screen; it wasn’t Marty’s actions that were on her mind. Mimi was becoming a problem, a threat to the experiment, a threat to her. Was history repeating itself? Was she always destined to always lose out to a human? A pang of guilt washed over her, as she remembered the human girl who had stolen Drew’s heart.
***
Merrill walked in to her dorm, and looked at the mirror covered in cloth. She closed her eyes and pulled the linen from its place. Slowly she opened her eyes, although saddened by the vision in front of her she was unsurprised that her reflection was not of the vampire she knew, but that of her evil doppelganger.
“So, he was good this time. What about you? You want to see how long he will hang around if you continue to be a nun?” Merrill’s double taunted. “You know you could easily take care of the human, just like before.” Merrill remained silent. “You know what to do.”
“No I won’t; not this time.” She whispered at the glass.
“Then you get to be the loser again.” The evil version of herself replied.
“Well it didn’t do me any good last time, Drew still didn’t want me.” Merrill argued.
“Well who would, no one likes a complete goody two-shoes.” The image sneered at the vampire in front of it. Merrill turned on her heel, intent on walking away, but she paused as her doppelganger whispered “You can’t keep me locked away forever.” Merrill turned back to the mirror alarmed that the only image there was that of herself.
***
Marty looked about him as the final group of day students left to be up in their rooms by curfew, he looked at the clock, only minutes to go. He threw down his pen, gathered his papers and headed for the spiral staircase, to where he knew the perfect secluded spot was located.
The vampire scaled the wall easily to grab the bag he had stashed on top of the bookshelves earlier. Dropping soundlessly to the floor, he opened the nap-sac. Its contents were spilled on to the ground as Marty turned the bag upside down. Quickly he laid out the blanket, and placed the candles around the edge. He picked up Merrill’s favourite poetry book, from where it had fallen and checked it for damage and placed it and the two blood allotment packs to one corner. Marty exhaled as he surveyed his romantic scene.
“Perfect, see if she can resist me now.” He said to himself, as his mind recalled all the advice that Drew had lectured him with.
“Ok Marty-boy we’re cool, we’re fine.” He carried on talking to himself, “No pushing, just a nice relaxed dinner with a bit of poetry and candle light and see how things go.”
“Talking to yourself?” Marty looked up from the scene to the owner of the voice. Merrill stood on the top step of the spiral staircase, leaning on the rail; a slight smile on her face. Marty looked his date up and down, he always did like her in her leather trousers, and the top she was wearing he was sure belonged to Essie, red, low cut and very sexy.
Marty allowed himself a smile as she sauntered over to him; he held out his arms to receive her embrace and sighed as she kissed him. As her fingers combed his hair, he wondered why he hadn’t tried this before.
Merrill pulled away, and looked at the blanket laid out with candles and dinner already for the drinking.
“Haven’t you been busy?” Merrill looked back over her shoulder at the male vampire; she stood her hands on her hips, a seductive pout on her lips. Marty frowned at her, this wasn’t the Merrill he knew, but then again she did have that turn last year where she went a bit crazy. She dropped her hand to her sides, and turned to face her partner. “It looks very nice, you’re very sweet.” She said softly, and saw the frown lift from Marty’s face.
***
“What the...?” Essie said as she looked at the mirror in her dorm.
“What’s up?” Drew asked her from the central room.
“Look at this!” The royal said annoyed. Drew stood up and walked over to the disgruntled vampire.
“How did that happen?” He asked as he looked at the smashed glass pane.
“I don’t know, but I’d sure like to find out.” Essie said shaking her head.
***
As much as Marty was enjoying himself, he wished that Merrill had allowed them to eat before they had embarked on the poetry, which apparently was a turn on for her. He hadn’t even finished the first verse before he was nibbling his ear. He pulled away from Merrill’s lips just long enough to blow out the final candle, the way they were rolling about on the floor, they were sure to knock one over soon enough and vampires don’t do well with fire.
A door slammed somewhere in the building. The pair of vampires sat up and listened intently.
“What was that?” Merrill asked alarmed.
“Nothing,” Marty said as he tried to pull Merrill back down.
“I’ll just be a moment.” Merrill stood up and walked beyond the bookshelves, Marty waited as patiently as he could until he saw her come back round the corner.
Merrill looked at Marty sat on the floor and wondered why his hair was so messed up, she looked at the twisted blanket beneath him, the blood packets strewed to one side, candles toppled over. If this was his idea of a romantic surprise, he needed a few pointers. He was looking at her expectantly, his head thingyed to one side.
“Told you it was nothing, you coming back down here?” He asked her. Merrill obliged despite what he said. What was nothing? And why did he say back? She’d only just got here. Merrill sat down her knees pulled up to her chest; she smiled at Marty wondering what was going on.
“Shall we eat?” She asked. Marty opened his mouth, a puzzled look on his face. Then he smiled,
“Oh I get it,” he whispered, “Who is it down there? Drew? Or Essie?”
“What are you talking about?” Merrill asked now the one puzzled.
“Don’t worry; I’m sure we can be quiet.” Marty said, his voice slightly growling, leaning in and kissing her, slowly trying to gently push her back down onto the blanket.
At first Merrill enjoyed the kiss, until she realised his intentions. She thought he was going to wait for her.
“Marty,” She mumbled as his fought to contain her lips with his. “Marty!” Merrill pushed him backwards. Marty stared at her wide eyed.
“I thought this was supposed to be an apology for pushing too far last night?” Merrill cried out at him.
“It was.” Marty spluttered out, “but then you came in here, dressed like that and...” Marty stopped, at a lost as to what was going on, “Why are you doing this again Merrill? Do you enjoying teasing me?” He voice hushed but the venom, hurt and humiliation evident in his tone. He shook his head at her.
“Me?” Merrill gasped, “I’ve done nothing!”
“Yeah right,” Marty said standing up, crossing his arms, “that’s exactly it, you don’t do anything, it’s all just empty promises with you isn’t it? I can’t believe I fell for it again.” Marty turned away from her and looked over the rail to view the empty library below.
“Well if that’s how you feel, why do you even bother with me?” Merrill said standing up.
“I sometimes wonder.” Marty answered, failing to turn and face her.
“Fine.” Merrill said to the back of Marty’s jumper, “Well you won’t have to anymore.” She said before storming down the spiral staircase. Marty watched her stomp her way across the library. He growled in frustration to himself.
“Merrill.” He yelled after her, “Merrill!” But she didn’t even pause at the sound of her name being called, in case he saw the tears that were streaming down her face.
***
Merrill walked quickly to her dorm, and pulled the curtains across. She paced the small room, muttering to herself. It took her a few moments to notice the mirror, shattered to pieces. She stopped in her tracks and looked at her reflection, her eyes noticing the top she was wearing. She looked down pulling the materials from her body.
“This is Essie’s.” She said to herself, alarm flashed through Merrill’s mind, what was she doing in Essie’s clothes? She would kill her. Quickly Merrill got changed into her own clothes and placed Essie’s garment as tidily as she could amongst Essie’s clothes waiting to be dry cleaned.
***
Marty sat on the leather chair, the common room was silent, there were no day students and none of his vampire kin had come up yet. He was thankful for the peace, his mind was reeling. Merrill had humiliated him, and revenge was playing heavily on his mind, and yet he knew it was just because of her nature. Her way that made her irresistible to him; her need to always do the right thing, to be good, to control every urge she ever had, made her so perfect and un vampire-like in his eyes, she was the closest he was ever going to get to being human again.
“Hi Marty,” the female voice came from behind him, flirty and sexy. Marty, so caught up in his own thoughts, had failed to notice her enter the solarium. He felt the two small hands start to caress the base of his neck.
“So much tension, that’s not good.” She whispered in to his ear, brushing it with her lips. The sensation sparked heat through Marty’s body, arousing him.
“Come on, it’s after curfew,” she said, “I don’t want to get caught down here.” Her hands left his neck, allowing him to look around at her for the first time. She had changed clothes from when he had seen her earlier in the evening. She now wore black leather trousers, and an almost see-through red sheer blouse, a feeling of déjà vu hit Marty. She held out her hand expectantly. Marty looked at it; so soft and delicate, the frustration within him was overwhelming, and he was single now wasn’t he? Marty looked up into her big brown eyes, and took her hand in his, allowing Mimi to guide him upstairs to the human dorms.
***
Merrill watched as Marty on the screen as he got up and allowed Mimi to lead him up the stairs to the human dorms. She thanks her lucky stars that none of the other vampires were around to see this. She couldn’t stop the tears from flowing from her eyes. She sat dejected, her head in her hands sobbing softly to herself.
“Poor sweet Merrill.” Fake sympathy edged the voice. Merrill lifted her head to see that the monitor no longer held the security footage from the Mansbridge common room but her own face, twisted with evil, smiling, showing fangs and blood shot eyes.
“Leave me alone.” Merrill said to the screen between heavy sobs, lowering her head back down.
“You’re a pathetic excuse for a vampire.” Her doppelganger said with distain, curling her lip in disgust. “A true vampire would get revenge.”
“I can’t, I’m trying to be human.” Merrill whimpered.
“Of course you can, that humans taken revenge on you for being with him. Now you can take yours. Kill her for taking what’s yours. You’ve done it before, and didn’t it feel good.”
“I’m the one that pushed him away though,” Merrill said quietly.
“He forced himself on you; so you should make him pay too.”
“But I wanted to be with him, but I just wanted to be...” Merrills’ voice trailed off as she looked her double on the monitor in the eye.
“You just wanted to be good...” Her evil twin finished for her “...and look where it has got you? You banished me to the deepest darkest depths, and it’s done you no good. Set me free, let’s take our revenge together, and behave like vampires are meant to.” The image on the display hissed. Merrill wiped the tears from her eyes, and stood up a defiant look on her face.
“I’ll deal with this myself.” She said as she walked away hearing nothing but the evil laughter of her double.
***
Mimi had obviously been planning this; her dorm room was lit by several candles spread around the room, creating a typical romantic mood.
“Where’s Dillon?” Marty asked, his eyes surveying the room for signs that they might be interrupted.
“She’s gone to the hospital again, more tests. So we have the whole room to ourselves until tomorrow morning.” Marty nodded understanding her intention. He moved his glance back to Mimi; she was standing near her little single bed, holding two glasses of red liquid. Marty was willing to bet it wasn’t blood which was a shame as he hadn’t eaten yet tonight.
“Wine?” Mimi held out one glass suggestively, not moving an inch, making Marty move to her. He toyed with the idea of satisfying both his lust and his hunger in one go. He stared at the girl in front of him, thingying his head to the one side. Just a little nibble did wonders for a girl during sex, and she’s just think he’d got overzealous in the moment. He had practised it many times, although there were occasions when the taste of blood had been so good that he hadn’t been able to stop. Marty paused for a moment; that was something he couldn’t risk now, or was it?
“Marty?” Marty realised he’s been staring in to space, he allowed his eyes to focus back on to Mimi, who had at some point unbuttoned her blouse, and sat on the bed. He was hungry and frustrated and to hell with the experiment; if Merrill didn’t want him, what else was there to stay here for, this would be the perfect revenge on all of them for trying to tame him. Marty walked slowly towards the bed, pulling his jumper over his head. He stood before Mimi, looking down at her small frame sitting on the bed, nervously sipping wine from her glass, staring at his perfectly toned, yet oddly white torso. He took the glass Mimi was still holding for him, and downed his in one go. Marty took her glass from her hand, and placed both his empty glass and hers half-full on the bedside table. He bent down kissing her on the lips, pushing her backwards onto the bed.
***
Merrill edged along the corridor of the human dorms. She had never been up here before, it was forbidden, she swallowed, nervous that she would be discovered. Her mind flickered onto what Mimi had planned for Marty and a strangely familiar feeling took over her, there could only be one, and that was her. No mere mortal was going to stop her from being happy again. A cackle from a nearby window pane alerted her that her doppelganger was watching.
***
Marty kissed the girl writhing under his body, allowing his tongue to play fight with hers. She tasted good, she tasted human, a taste that had long been hungered for. Mimi wasn’t sure how they had removed their clothes so quickly, she remember her bra flying off as if it had a mind of its own, and now they were here, only their underwear left, in the throws of passion. She moved her mouth away from his, and performed practised feather-light kisses along his jaw line, and to his throat, where her kisses became more vigorous, and her teeth nipped his flesh. She heard the growl that escaped his lips and knew he was enjoying it.
Marty laughed at the humans antics, lifting his head granting her more access to his throat. Marty’s red eyes glowed in the dim light, his fangs unsheathed.
“Kiss me.” Mimi commanded raising her head, and Marty pulled the vampire within, obliging her wish, he knew to make his move too soon, would bring attention to his whereabouts and his intentions. “Gently.” Mimi whispered between kisses, and Marty knew he was being too forceful in his want for satisfaction. He allowed himself to think of Merrill, instantly becoming more caress-like with his touch. He felt the girl beneath smile and relax as he altered his tactics.
Marty reached his hand to softly hold hers, then moved down her body so that he could kiss it. He nibbled and kissed his way up her arm, and onto her shoulder and neck. The vampire licked the girls’ neck, but his fangs didn’t unsheathe.
“Marty,” The words were slightly breathless, and not the voice he was expecting. He opened his eyes to look at the girl that lay beneath him. Her eyes were the wrong colour; they were brown instead of blue. He looked down and recognised the girl as Mimi, and not who for the last few minutes he thought he was with, and it felt wrong, very wrong.
***
Merrill pressed her ear up against the door listening to the sound of kissing and moans of pleasure, her eyes were glowing red with anger and the spell was already on her lips. ‘Do it’ the voice whispered in her head, the voice she had heard before, the one that had urged her on the night that Sherry died. The curse died on her lips, as she opened her eyes and caught the sight of her reflection in the hallway mirror. Her counterpart stood with a smile on her lips,
“Go on, what are you waiting for, set me free again.” Her second self urged her on, “take your revenge. Kill the human, and hurt the one who has caused you so much pain. Don’t let history repeat itself, don’t be the loser again.”
***
Marty knew he should apologise as he pulled on his jeans, but he didn’t feel sorry for what had just happened, just grateful nothing too serious had occurred. He looked at the girl, close to tears, pulling up her bed sheet around her naked chest; it amused him that she did that, as if he hadn’t been kissing her breasts just minutes before.
“Look, Mim’s it was...great, but ...” He just wanted to get out of there, without all this talking crap. “I need to find Merrill.” Marty pulled his jumper over his head, and headed for the door, not looking back.
***
Merrill moved back into the shadows just in the time as the door swung open, and she watched Marty walk as fast as he could down the corridor, without using his vampire speed, looking warily around him for another who might see him. She watched from the balcony as he practically ran down the stairs and into Murdoch’s study; he was headed for the basement. Merrill heard the sobs from the dorm room behind her, and knew that Marty had remained faithful.
“What are you waiting for? Finish the job; make sure she never tries anything like this again.” The voice in the mirror commanded.
“No.” Merrill spoke aloud to the mirror, “Essie was right, there is always a middle ground, I can indulge in what will make me happy but not at the expense of others. You will not rule over me, but I will not banish you altogether either.”
Merrill turned away from the mirror as she heard a glass crash against the door, a sign of Mimi’s frustration of not getting what she wanted, and when she turned back, her reflect was her own. Meek mild Merrill, the vampire she was, who she wanted to be, but someone who could have fun when it was the right time. Merrill smile has a naughty tilt to it, and she tidied up her hair and straightened her clothing before heading down the stairs.
***
“Where’s Merrill?” The three vampires looked up from their books at the demand.
“She’s not with you? Why is your jumper on back-to-front?” Karl asked, looking at the white label showing against the black material.
“Not to mention, inside out.” Essie added, her eyebrows raised in suspicion.
“Where’s Merrill?” Marty repeated himself.
“Not seen her for hours,” Drew said coolly, “who have you been having fun with? Mimi?” Marty snarled at Drew, wondering exactly how much time he spent in astral projection. Marty spun round and headed back up the slope into Murdoch’s office.
Marching through the study, Marty burst out of the door into the common room, and stopped dead in his tracks. He swallowed as he saw Merrill looking curiously at him only a few steps away. The urge to lie and cover his tracks was overwhelming.
“I’ve been with Mimi.” Marty felt remorse like he had never known it as he watched Merrill’s lower jaw fall. Merrill couldn’t believe what she was hearing, she had prepared herself for a lie, but for Marty to give her the truth, and without any prompting, she was gobsmacked. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t... we didn’t... I don’t know what came over me I was...frustrated...stupid...” Marty couldn’t find the words to explain his actions and finally gave up. Merrill looked at the vampire in front of her, obviously so uncomfortable trying to explain his feelings and his actions, apologising. She wondered how many times he had done this before, and thought that perhaps, even give his long life, it was only a few times.
“Merrill, just say something, will you.” Marty growled. She realised she had been lost in thought.
“I’m sorry too.” She said, her heart going out to him, knowing that his actions were based on rejection, and the vampires’ instinct to reap revenge.
“What...what for?” Marty asked confused.
Merrill quickly closed the gap between them, kissing him forcefully, her fingers becoming entangled in his hair. Marty pulled away for a brief second.
“Merrill is this really you?” he asked.
“Marty,” Merrill looked forlorn, Mary looked at her, she was no longer wearing the leather trousers, or the red top; she was in her plain simple black dress. She looked nervous, not the minx that had teased him earlier. “I want this; I just saw it as a bad thing, something i needed to control, but there has to be a middle ground. It can’t be wrong if it feels right and no one gets hurt.” Marty stood a little confused at her statement, “I want you.” She whispered back before resuming her kiss, tugging Marty across the common room, into the library.
***
Marty sat on the floor, his back against the bookcase, contented; his eyes closed enjoying the sensation of Merrill in his arms, as she sat between his legs, resting on his chest.
“Are you ok?” He asked her quietly as he gently kissed the side of her head. He felt the girl nod her head, in reply.
“You?” She asked a smile on her lips.
“Never better,” he whispered into her ear,
“and you managed to get dressed properly this time too.” She giggled at him and she turned to look up at him and toyed with his jumper, enjoying the puzzled look on his face.
“So,” Marty began sensuously, “you think you can get use to being slightly naughty every once in a while?” The vampiress smiled at him.
“You hungry?” She asked
“Starving.”

The instinct to obtain revenge is strong within ones that have the power to do so. The vampire having been wronged can easily kill their opponent. My vampires must learn to show mercy and compassion, as humans may not be kind to them. To prove that the vampire race to be accepted in human society they must show they can be civilised and show they are not to be feared. Each of us has a dark side; this second self is far more powerful for beings akin with the darkness like the vampire. The power to overcome this version of their souls is a critical step for the experiment.
