Hope you like it
"OK doc, can I go now?" Marty asked eager to leave the imprisonment that was the Mansbridge cellar.
"Wait for me in my office Marty while I give the rest of your class their assignment for the rest of the night." Dr. Murdoch said.
Marty skipped up the stone path to the exit of the cellar into Dr. Murdoch's office as the rest of the class let out sighs and moans of protest to having to do more studying. It didn't matter who was picked to go into the town they still would have complained. But seeing as it was Marty they put in extra effort.
"Why do we have to do more studying when Marty gets to go parading through town?" Essie asked staring at Dr. Murdoch hoping her powers of persuasion would finally work against him. Alas to no avail.
"Think of it as you four are getting the upper hand on Marty when it comes to knowledge. Also I will make sure there will be no parading tonight." Dr. Murdoch finished with a warm smile.
"Whatever you say". Essie said as she folded her arms and stared at the stone floor.
"Besides Marty isn't just going into town to have fun like he thinks." Dr. Murdoch allowed a small grin to show for a second.
The rest of the class sat up a millimetre in their chairs waiting for what Dr. Murdoch's next sentence. It seemed as though he would never speak again how long he kept them waiting.
"What do you mean by that Dr. Murdoch?" asked Merrill finally breaking the ice.
"I'm going to give Marty a little assignment, and if he doesn't pass, well lets just say you remember the stirring don't you?" Dr. Murdoch finished and left them to there thoughts for a minute.
They all remembered the stirring. Marty's thirst became unbearable and he tried to feed on Sherry, manipulating her feelings and took his time doing it. He talked to her through a divining board for days making her think he was in love with her and he would take her away from her prison. He almost succeeded with his plan as well, luckily Dr. Murdoch found a way to stop him. Marty's punishment however was to polish everybody else's shoes. They all shared a smile when they remembered handing Marty their shoes.
"So you remember?" Dr. Murdoch asked.
"Yeah I gave him the worst pair of shoes I had." Drew said with a smile as he turned to look at Merrill who smiled with him when she looked at him.
"Well last time you gave him two pairs of shoes each this time he will clean every pair of shoes Essie owns." Dr. Murdoch finished.
“Wait a minute doc don't you think that's a bit extreme.” Karl said sarcastically.
Essie gave Karl a slap round the back of the head.
“Ow, what was that for?” Karl asked rubbing the back of his head.
“What do you mean by extreme?” Essie asked glaring at Karl.
“He means you own to many pairs of shoes.” Drew said.
He could tell from the look on Essie's face he should not have said anything. Essie's hand was back behind her head ready to hit Drew right on the side of the face when Merrill stood up in front of him.
“Calm down Essie you know he has no idea about fashion.”
Drew was about to ask Merrill what she meant by that when she turned around and winked at him. He then realized that Merrill was saving him from an ordeal he could not win. He stared at the back of Merrill's head as she persuaded Essie not to hurt him he couldn't help but admire her for this.
“I guess your right Merrill, I mean just look at those sideburns.” Essie said spitefully.
“I know their hideous.” Merrill replied.
“Let's get back on topic.” Dr. Murdoch said right before Drew got a word in.
“Let's do that before all hell breaks loose.” Karl said still rubbing his head.
“Thank you Karl. Now, I want you to quiz Marty when he comes back from his little field trip.”
“What on?” asked Merrill.
“Everything what the weather was like, how many people did he see, the colour of their eyes, hair, shoes. I want you to ask him everything, and if he loses his temper before the end of the night he polishes.” Dr. Murdoch finished and turned around and walked up the stone path to the exit of the cellar.
None of the vampires said anything for five minutes. Drew and Karl were to afraid to say anything in case another argument broke out. Essie was staring at the floor again and Merrill was staring at the ceiling.
“Right well I am going to get started on a list of questions to ask Marty when he gets back, let me know when he crawls back, I should be able to smell him but you never know. Ciao.” Essie said and walked back to her room.
“No more fire and brimstone then?” Karl joked as soon as Essie was out of ear shot.
“I wouldn't be to sure about that.” said Merrill not taking her eyes off the ceiling.
Karl didn't know what to say. He sat there like a little boy in school waiting on his teacher telling him he was allowed to speak. He finally found words in his mouth.
“I think I'll go to my room and do a bit more studying.” Karl got up and walked over to his room keeping his eyes fixed on the floor not daring to look at Merrill.
Drew waited till Karl was inside his room before he stood up and walked over to Merrill. He looked at her, her eyes still fixed on the ceiling.
“The ceiling might be better looking than me but you don't need to flaunt it.” said Drew.
Merrill laughed and took her eyes off the ceiling and looked at Drew. “Is it that obvious?” Merrill laughed.
“Yeah it is. And what's wrong with my sideburns?” Drew asked.
“Oh nothing.” Merrill said as she returned her gaze to the ceiling.
“By the way when Karl said he was going to his room to study.” Drew said.
“What about it?” Merrill asked.
“Do you think he knows he left his book on the table?” Drew asked pointing to the old leather book lying open on the table.
Merrill and Drew burst out laughing. They walked over to one of the small couches and laid there in each other's arms. This seemed like heaven to them. Sure they would have liked to have left the cellar for a night, but being together they didn't give it any more thought.
Meanwhile up in Dr. Murdoch's office Marty was standing anxiously waiting for Dr. Murdoch to let him leave. His leg was twitching with anticipation to leave this place for one night was like a week in Hawaii for a mortal. No dark damp cellar, no need to watch Drew and Merrill living their dream while he toils in a nightmare. The thought of Drew with Merrill instead of him made his fist clench and his jaw lock. If he didn't hear Dr. Murdoch coming up out of the cellar he would have thrown something like a chair at the wall using his telekinesis. He turned to see Dr. Murdoch entering the room still wearing that warm smile, even though Marty didn't like to show it he liked Dr. Murdoch, he allowed him to play piano when the other's were studying on occasion. And once taught Marty how to play a new piece of music which he then played to the rest of his class. Marty didn't tell anyone this but the only reason he agreed to play in front of his class was so Merrill would see him play. And she gave him a standing applause as he finished. Making it all worth it.
“Are you ready to go?” Dr. Murdoch asked.
“I'm always ready remember doc?” Marty said with his sly grin showing.
“You have a point there Marty. So you are ready for the assignment I am going to give you then?”
Marty couldn't believe it even though he won the lottery he still had homework to do. He thought he could try and get over Merrill tonight. Give him time to see to his feelings and get them under control.
“I want you to observe everything you see tonight.”
Marty couldn't believe what he had just heard it was the easiest assignment he had ever been given. Even Karl could do it.
“That's all I've got to do?” Marty said trying not to make it sound as though it was an easy assignment.
“Why do you think I gave you this assignment Marty?” Dr. Murdoch asked.
“Don't know.” Marty said now staring at the door.
“I want you to see how you will live when the experiment is over. You will no longer be bound to the confines of the cellar. You will be able to walk free. Not in the sunshine but in the moonlight, knowing you will not have to kill anyone you meet to survive.” Dr. Murdoch finished feeling quite proud as what he had just described, he would be one of the reasons it was possible.
“Yeah whatever doc, can I go now?” Marty asked not taking his eyes off the door.
Dr. Murdoch breathed a deep sigh, there was no point in trying to make Marty understand the significance of this. So reluctantly he allowed him to go with the wave of a hand.
Marty sped toward the door as a black haze and with one blink he was gone. Dr. Murdoch walked over to his desk and sat in his chair. He stared at the door Marty had just left and wondered if this little project would be successful or would it turn out like the last time, that was extremely unlikely as the blood they were given was not an emergency ration. There was a chance though that it would turn out worse than the last time. Dr. Murdoch contemplated this for a moment and shook off the feeling with a smile. He then checked his watch returned it to his pocket and walked over to his bookcase and retrieved the book he was reading earlier. He had only finished the first page of the book when there was a knock on his office door. He proceeded over to the door and took a glance at the cellar door to make sure it was locked he then opened his office door and recognized immediately who was standing there.
“Dr. Murdoch so nice to see you again.”
The woman stood there wearing a dark blue suit carrying a briefcase she had blonde hair down to her shoulders and had distinguished facial features that did not go with her profession.
“Marian Hackett, what can I do or you?” Dr. Murdoch asked as a lump appeared in his throat and his stomach went into several knots. Things had gotten worse since last time.
"OK doc, can I go now?" Marty asked eager to leave the imprisonment that was the Mansbridge cellar.
"Wait for me in my office Marty while I give the rest of your class their assignment for the rest of the night." Dr. Murdoch said.
