Before you read this you'll have to read my first story 'realization' to understand some pieces of it.
If you have already enjoy ;D
It was another night at the Mansbridge academy where all the day students were in their rooms after a hard day of learning from their respective teachers. The most respected of the teachers, Dr. Murdoch was just about to begin another lesson. He sat in his study reading a large hard backed book that appeared to be considerably old. He gently turned the crisp pages trying not to damage the book in the slightest. He took his watch from his pocket and popped open the silver cover, the time was twenty two minutes to eleven to be exact. Dr. Murdoch then wiped his watch with a handkerchief and returned it to his waist coat pocket. He then continued reading his book. He knew it wasn't long before his class was to commence. He finished the chapter he was reading. Gently closed the book, got up and carried it to his bookshelf he found the exact place he had taken it from parted the other's books with one hand and slid the other book back into its rightful place with a snug fit. He then returned to his desk he sat down and checked his watch again. It had taken him one minute to get up and place the book back in its rightful position and sit back down again. He returned his watch to his pocket and rested his hands on his desk and stared at the coat of arms on the entrance to his so called 'wine cellar'. Exactly one minute later the coat of arms rotated to the right approximately ninety degrees and the entire wall slid back and from the opening it made out came five blurs and within one blink they were in front of Dr. Murdoch's desk and turned out to now be five people. It was time to commence Dr. Murdoch's lesson.
"Good evening everyone." Dr. Murdoch said to the five people in front of his desk.
"Good evening Dr. Murdoch." Answered Merrill.
"What's up doc?" Marty said.
"Hey how's it going?" Karl said.
Drew just stared forward not saying anything, wondering what boring task they would be set this time.
Essie however was looking at herself in a mirror on the left side of the room, making sure her hair was perfect and her outfit amplified her eyes in the right way.
"I trust you all slept well?"
"Very well." Merrill answered with a smile.
"As well as possible, after all living in a dark damp cellar doesn't have that many plus sides to it." Drew said as brooding as usual.
"The only plus side to it for you Drew is on your left." Karl said.
Drew looked at his left to see Merrill looking back at him, they both smiled as their eyes met. Drew and Merrill had been together ever since the Dillan fiasco when she nearly became a vampire two months ago. Drew had finally realized he should not always be looking for forbidden love and realized how perfect Merrill was. They were always together from the moment they were both awake until the times they went back to their coffins and there was the couple of times they slept in the same coffin, they did not do anything but lie in each other’s arms and talk on those nights. These were some of Drew's fondest memories of being with Merrill. Merrill's however was of the night they spent together in the library.
"Your right about that." Drew said without taking his eyes off of Merrill.
Merrill giggled and looked away to the floor. Even though she had been with Drew for a while now she still got embarrassed when Drew complimented her in front of people. She felt like her insides would explode every time Drew looked at her and smiled. She had never been in a relationship before and was excited to have one with the person she thought was the 'one'. After Merrill had stopped giggling she returned her sight to Dr. Murdoch.
"Anyway we are going to be doing a bit of reading for the first few hours." Dr. Murdoch said.
The group of vampires all groaned and complained, they all hated having to read up on vampire history except for Merrill, she wanted to shout with excitement about their task they were set but decided against it. Most of the group didn't mind reading but they all preferred a different genre and none of them liked vampire history, Merrill preferred actual history on everything not just vampires. Drew was a fan of poetry and love stories. Essie mostly just read fashion magazines or the occasional drama. Karl enjoyed to read crime thrillers, even though he didn't understand all of it most of the time, he liked how they would always get there man in the end and if at the end of the book the criminal wasn't caught, Karl would tear up the book and toss the shredding in the nearest bin. Marty however didn't bother to read book's the last book he read was the one on black magic that he used to put a love spell on Essie and that ended up with her wanting to get married and then stabbing him. So Marty wasn't that keen on reading he usually floated the book with his telekinesis or if he was allowed would play the piano while the rest read there book's. Marty had actually over his time at Mansbridge become quite a skilled pianist.
After they had all finished complaining they were all handed their books and retreated back into the cellar. The vampires sat around the large black table, Merrill was quickly skimming through the book trying to absorb every small detail while the others stared at the first page blankly trying to take in the first sentence. Drew sat staring at the book looking for words he could use in writing a poem for Merrill. Karl was flicking through the book for any pictures and Essie was looking for self portraits to laugh at how bad their clothes looked back then. Marty on the other hand was balancing chairs on top of each other with his telekinesis.
“Why do we have to read this anyway?” asked Karl as he stretched his arms above his head.
“It lets us know about our heritage.” Answered Merrill without looking up from the book.
“The only thing I need to know about my heritage is how far I have to run before it leaves me.” Marty said as he returned the chairs to the floor.
“I can’t believe you would say something like that.” Merrill said raising her eyes from her book for a second only to glance a Marty and continued reading.
“What Merrill we’ve all met your maker and let’s just say she didn’t make a good first impression.” Marty said with a smile.
Marty was referring to Patsy La Roux Merrill’s maker who showed up when Merrill send out a telepathic call for help, when all she could see was Drew lusting for Sherry. It ended with Patsy snapping at Drew for telling her she couldn’t just take Merrill away from the experiment, luckily Vakaal showed up and stopped her and erased her memory of everything she saw at Mansbridge and she’s never made a surprise appearance since.
“We didn’t get to choose our makers Marty.” Said Drew defending Merrill.
Merrill smiled at Drew for helping her. Drew knew she could hold her own in an argument against Marty but he loved to shut Marty up any chance he got.
“Speaking of maker’s what was your maker like Marty?” Merrill asked with a smile as she finished a chapter and closed her book.
“I have no idea and I’d like it to stay that way.” Marty said changing sly grin to a serious stare.
“What do you mean?” Merrill asked.
“I never met my maker, I was walking home one night and was jumped I felt the fangs sink into my neck and the next thing I knew I woke up on the ground already feeling the thirst, and you know the rest Merrill.” Marty finished and walked away.
Merrill knew what Marty was referring to, not too long ago he told her of the night he was turned and that he killed a large number of people the last of them being a young boy. But to make sure nobody asked her what happened next she reopened her book and began to skim through the pages she had already read to make herself look occupied. Merrill began to think what her life would be like if Patsy had just made her and left her to fend for herself. She wouldn’t have killed that young girl that she saw during the summoning ritual, she probably wouldn’t have learnt how to read minds. But she might have went on a killing spree and joined the fury and might have ended up trying to track down the location of this experiment that she has now loved for so long. And most important of all she might never have met Drew. Merrill went over this in her head a few times and concluded that it was somehow better that Patsy did not leave her after she turned her, just thinking this made her skin crawl.
Drew began to stare at Merrill and contemplated asking her what Marty meant. But he saw she had started reading again and one of the things she hated most was when someone interrupted her when she was halfway through a page of a book. Drew thought about how he on occasion just sat and watched Merrill read, from time to time he would even make small sketches that he would give her when he was done. He made sure not to finish a small detail of the sketch just to make sure there wouldn’t be a repeat of what had happened to Sherry with the portrait, he knew the odds of that happening with such a small sketch were almost zero but he always made sure anyway.
Not long after this Dr. Murdoch came down to the cellar holding a medium sized pot. He set the pot down on the table and called for his students to join him.
“I trust your all reading through your books eagerly.” He said as he watched them gather round the table.
“Real page turner, hard to put down.” Marty said sarcastically.
The rest of the group sblack personed.
“Really? Well you can tell us all about the first person the book mentions then Marty.” Dr. Murdoch said with a warm smile knowing Marty couldn’t even tell him the title of the book.
“Like that will happen. What’s with the pot doc?” asked Karl saving Marty from an embarrassing fiasco that would have lead to him looking even more like an idiot.
“I’m glad you asked Karl, do you remember that little lottery we had a few months ago?”
“The one where you picked two of us to visit the town as a project?” Merrill asked guessing she knew what Dr. Murdoch was going to say next.
“Correct and do you remember what happened last time?”
The group knew but none wanted to say. The blood they had been given that night was devoid of all nutrients so they pretty much ate nothing but didn’t realise until the thirst was uncontrollable. Drew was in the library with Sherry at the time and almost fed on her but managed to pry himself away and found Merrill in the exact same state of hunger. Karl on the other hand had been effected earlier than everyone else but they all guessed it was because he was always hungry and ate the most. It wasn’t until he attacked Dr. Murdoch that he found out something was wrong. Dr. Murdoch managed to subdue Karl and get to Essie and Karl with some blood before they killed Nick.
“Judging by your expressions you all still remember, well do you remember how Essie and Karl ended up in that bar?” Dr. Murdoch asked lifting the pot.
“Yeah you picked their names out a...... pot.” Karl realised what the pot was for as he finished his sentence.
“Precisely, well I thought we could try this little experiment again seeing as you aren’t on emergency blood rations the mix up shouldn’t happen again. And this time it won’t be two people going. I’m allowing just one to go this time.”
The class were a bit surprised at what Dr. Murdoch just said normally there would always be two set a task one to keep an eye on the other. Usually it would be two so one would normally keep an eye on Marty.
“Dr. Murdoch don’t you think it should be two to go so one can watch the other.” Merrill said and her eyes turned to Marty as to signal she meant he had to be watched and then to Drew because a night out on the town with him to her was a dream night out.
“Perhaps Merrill but you have all progressed so well over your time at Mansbridge that I trust your judgement.” Dr. Murdoch gave them all a warm smile and produced five pieces of paper from his jacket pocket and dropped them in the pot.
The group watched eagerly as Dr. Murdoch reached into the pot and pulled out a single piece of paper.
“Drum roll.” Essie said.
Marty then rattled the table with his palms until Dr. Murdoch unfolded the small piece of paper.
“And the winner is.......” Dr. Murdoch said.
The group all moved a bit closer hoping it would be there name to be called. So they could escape the dark cellar and live free for only a night but a wonderful night it would be to them.
“Marty.” Dr. Murdoch said as he showed the piece of paper to his class.
None of the students could believe it there in front of them was a piece of paper with Marty’s name written on it in a very fine font – obviously written by Dr. Murdoch. It took a moment for what had just happened to be processed by all five of them but obviously Marty was the first to react.
“Whoo-hoo!” Marty shouted as he jumped up and kicked the chair he was sitting on away .
“Congratulations Marty you can leave after I have briefed you on the rules of this trip.” Said Dr. Murdoch.
“What do you mean rules doc?” Marty asked.
“Well for starters no using your powers to do harm to the mortals.”
“I know that one.”
“No stealing of any kind.”
“Of course.”
“Make sure to keep your fangs hidden.”
“Doc your telling me like this like I don’t have a brain.”
“That’s because you don’t” Essie said.
Karl, Merrill and Drew let out small shrivels of laughter.
“Bite me Essie.” Marty said.
“And no social interaction of any kind if it can be helped especially with the opposite sex.” Dr. Murdoch finished with a smile.
“What!” Marty exclaimed. “I can’t try and pick up one girl.”
“No Marty after last time I am not taking any chances."
