Hope you like it ;D
"What do you mean you mean you have no idea?" Merrill asked trying to understand what she was looking at on the monitor.
"I mean this has never happened before in vampire history as far as I know. The elders would know more but I don't want to contact them for obvious reasons."
The obvious reason being they would most probably kill Dillan as a safety measure to make sure she wouldn't completely turn into a vampire and kill everybody in the school and inevitably be found by the fury. She could tear down the whole experiment on her own if the worst came to happen and if the Mansbridge night students managed to subdue before she caused any severe damage they would still have to kill her.
"Dr. Murdoch what are we supposed to do now?" Drew asked pleading for Dr. Murdoch to give him an answer he could accept.
Dr. Murdoch just sat there staring blankly at the floor. He had no idea what to do. After a few minutes of thinking he still didn;t have an answer for Drew, but Drew could help him come up with an answer he thought. He stood up and turned to his class.
"I cannot give you an answer but your going to help me find one." Murdoch said to his students.
The vampires looked at each other in confusion. How could they work out an answer to a question there teacher couldn't answer. They had learned over there time with Dr. Murdoch that he was an exceptionally intelligent man and knew more about their race than they all did combined including Merrill.
"If your wondering how you are going to help your going to brainstorm. Just fire out ideas and I'll work out if it's possible. Now let's begin."
It took the class five minutes before they came up with one suggestion of how this scenario came about.
"Maybe there was some left over vampire blood left in the ring and it mixed with Dillan's and you know..... diluted thats the word." Marty said throwing a random answer out for Dr. Murdoch to assess.
"Nope the ring does not leave a single trace of blood behind when it is emptied." Dr. Murdoch picked up the ring. "See its completely clean you could not even small a trace of blood on it."
The vampire's head's fell it was not the answer they were looking for from there teacher.
"Maybe it was another substance that you put into Dillan's blood sample. Like something got into the cylinder of silver and you put most of that on the sample and only a small trace of silver so it took longer to affect the blood?" Drew suggested.
The group all turned from facing Drew back to Dr. Murdoch to hear his answer.
"Good suggestion but alas no."
Once again they became overly depressed even for Drew's standards he looked sadder than usual.
"I made the silver myself and was extremely careful to make sure it was not tainted with another substance."
They all went back to thinking for another five minutes before Merrill finally made a suggestion.
"Dillan turned into a vampire for a short period of time when she was down here being looked after by us right?"
Dr. Murdoch nodded still thinking of an answer himself.
"Yeah she nearly snapped my neck before Karl broke out of the cage and stopped her. Then she changed back to a human lucky her we thought." said Drew.
"Well maybe all the remedies I used worked." said Merrill.
"What do you mean Merrill?" asked Dr. Murdoch.
"I used every remedy I knew to stop Dillan changing into a vampire perhaps I weakened it enough that it could only keep control of her DNA for a short amount of time before it had to stop."
"So you mean it stopped and died, but we know that's not true that thing on the monitor proves that." Marty said pointing to the monitor with Dillan's blood sample displayed on it affected by the silver.
"That's not what I mean Marty you idiot." This was overly mean for Merrill normally she would stop and apologies but this time she was too busy explaining her idea. "I mean it's lying dormant in her system. We all heard Marian Hackett say that the reason we are made vampires is a disease that attacks our DNA and alters it and makes us what we are. What if this time it wasn't strong enough? It tried to alter her DNA and didn't have the strength and in lame-n's terms stopped to rest till it had the strength to."
When Merill finished her explanation they all turned to Dr. Murdoch again to hear his assessment.
"It's possible that could be why. Good idea Merrill."
"Right how do we get rid of the disease then?" Asked Drew
"Slow down Drew first we don't even know that's what is wrong with Dillan so we need to prove it first. And second if there was a way to get rid of the disease that makes a person a vampire do you think you would be here?" Dr. Murdoch said.
Drew breathed a deep sigh he was right they had to be sure first and if there was a cure for being a vampire he would be a mortal and with Sherry right now. "Fine what is it we do to confirm that this is what's up with Dillan?"
"We'll have to make the disease active." Merrill answered.
"Won't that make the disease permanent in her DNA and she'll stay a vampire?" Drew asked.
"Maybe but I wouldn't count on it?" Merrill answered again.
"Why not you said the disease has been dormant resting in her body. It's been resting for the entire time she was not at school during the break between semesters that's a long time for it to gather strength." Drew sounded worried for once, he usually sounded tense or depressed but never worried.
"Unless Dillan was out drinking blood every second day the disease would probably be at the same stage as it was on her last day before the break between semester's maybe a little stronger."
"How's that?" Karl asked before Drew got the chance to.
"Unless Dillan is a hermit. Which I very much doubt she probably left her house or had her drapes open in her room."
"So what does that mean?" It was Essie's turn to ask a question.
"She would be out in sunlight and that would suppress the disease from spreading."
"Yeah it's good the disease hasn't gotten any stronger, but if it's still so weak how do we make it surface?" Drew finally got a question in and it was a good one.
Essie, Karl, Marty and Drew all looked at Merrill for an answer but Merrill didn't have one she turned to the only other person in the room who might, Dr. Murdoch and the rest of the group followed. They all looked at their teacher as he rose up out of his chair and straightened his tie.
"I think I might have an idea." Dr Murdoch said with a smile.
The class smiled there teacher was back. He was the teacher they all knew again. the one who always had an answer for any question and could cheer any of them up no matter the circumstances.
"There is one catch though, when we make the disease surface Dillan will be extremely hard to contain so we'll have to lock her up beforehand." Dr. Murdoch added.
"No problem we'll just get Essie to persuade her." Said Drew.
"That's the thing I don't think the disease will surface if she is under Essie's persuasion power."
"No problem we'll grab her out her bed at night." Suggested Marty.
"That will lead to her waking up in a strangers arm's which will lead to her screaming causing other day school students to wake up and realize she is missing and alerting me and make me phone the police and when there is no trace of her then she suddenly reappears or disappears completely after being abducted by someone with enhanced speed we'll have Marian Hackett beating down the door again." Dr. Murdoch explained to this to Marty like he was a small child.
"What do we do then?" Asked Marty hoping not to be talked down to again.
"You do nothing to get her to us I will handle it. The other thing is the safest place to contain her is here in the cellar, it's going to be tricky to convince her to come down here but when she does you can force her into the cage and I'll take care of the rest understood. And we'll have to make sure when I get her to come down that Mimi does not know about it other wise she'll suspect me of something?"
"How do we get her out of the room then long enough for you to call Dillan?" Drew asked.
"I'll give out a surprise essay in class tomorrow that should make her spend most of the night in the library. Somebody should put pillows in Dillan's bed to make it look like she's asleep to Mimi though when she returns to her room."
"It's a plan." Merrill finished.
"And now have a bit of leisure time and get some rest we'll have a long night tomorrow." Dr. Murdoch said as he gathered up all the equipment he had brought with him and put it back into the cardboard box and made his way to the cellar entrance.
The group of vampires all sat round the table all in there own train of thought. Drew was hoping that they could cure Dillan and this nightmare would end. Merrill was thinking about Drew and if she could try and comfort him. Karl was thinking this whole ordeal was his fault. He was the one who bit Dillan and made her what she was. Essie was thinking about trying to comfort Karl she knew he blamed himself for this and could not forgive himself until it was over and Dillan was alive and well. Marty on the other hand verbalized his thought's for everyone to hear.
"We should have killed Dillan last time just after Karl bit her."
The rest of the group glared at Marty some couldn't believe what he said but Drew believed it, it was typical Marty to him if anything gets in the way stake it or sink your fang's in it.
"That would be wrong." Essie said to Marty.
"How would it we should have killed her and threw her body in a ditch somewhere a mile away to be found by some hitch hiker. The police would think she sneaked into town and was attacked." Marty was so calm at what he just said none could believe it.
"I'm warning you Marty I'd really like to finish what we started earlier." Drew said as he stood up and cracked his fist off the table.
"Marty this experiment is meant to make us more humane and you suggest that you make me sick." Merrill said as she stood up and stormed off to her room.
Marty had stood up and was about to head on at Drew but after hearing those words come from Merrill's mouth he lost the will to fight. He collapsed back into the chair and watched her walk away. He knew he should have said something but didn't know what.
"You idiot." Drew said as he left the table and went after Merrill.
Drew found Merrill in her room standing against her coffin nearly crying. He looked around Merill's room it was plain there was no drapes like Essie's or clothes scattered everywhere like Karl's. It was just a plain room with stone wall's with a coffin on one side and a small trunk at the bottom. But it still didn't look like a dark damp place. Merrill made it a habitable place to be. Drew approached her slowly he didn't know if she realized he was there.
"You Okay?" Drew asked softly.
"How can he be so barbaric. Has this experiment not taught him anything." Merrill turned to Drew about to start crying.
"Hey its alright." Drew grabbed Merrill by the shoulders. "It's just Marty he's always like that you just need to not let it bother you so much." Drew's words were soft and kind.
"But I'm so angry." Merrill said as a tear ran down her cheek.
"Don't be your not as pretty when your angry." Drew joked.
Merrill laughed. "Thanks Drew."
"Don't worry about it." Drew said ah wrapped his arm's around her.
This was what Merrill had wanted most in the world Drew alone them both in each other's arm's she felt as though her heart would explode. But she couldn't shake the thought he was just being kind to comfort her because of what Marty had said. She had to be positive it wasn't just because of what happened a few minutes before so she thought hard and finally thought of something.
"Was Sherry pretty when she was angry?" Merrill asked praying for Drew not to pull away.
Drew very slowly moved Merrill back keeping his hands on her shoulders. Merrill was praying in her head he wouldn't leave.
Drew looked Merrill deep in her blue eyes and said "Let's not talk about Sherry from now on." Drew leaned forward to Merrill.
Merrill's heart was ablaze as she leaned forward as well. She was millimeters away from him and then there lips met. They stayed together like this for what seemed like to Merrill eternity she didn't want them to part.
"Hey Merrill I'd like to apologies for what I said."
Merrill broke away from Drew as he turned around and they both saw Marty enter the room.
"Oh sorry did I interrupt something." asked Marty.
"No" Merrill and Drew said at the same time. They both looked at each other and wanted to laugh but knew they couldn't or Marty would know they were lien.
"I'd better leave you two alone." Drew said as he walked toward the door. He really didn't want to leave Merrill alone with Marty but if he stayed he might suspect him and even though Marty had feelings for Merrill he was absolutely positive now that she had none for him.
"What was that about?" Marty asked Merrill as he watched Drew leave with a smile on his face for once.
"Oh nothing he was just seeing if I was alright after I stormed out because of what you said about Dillan." Merrill told Marty not taking her eyes off Drew as he left.
"Yeah about that. " Marty said as he walked over to Merrill. "I want to apologies for what I said earlier I just wasn't thinking straight this thing hasn't been helping me sleep lately you know what I mean?"
Merrill was staring at where Drew had left the room.
"Merrill?"
"What........ uh yeah I know what you mean by that." Merrill answered having no idea what Marty had just said. She was to busy thinking about Drew.
"Yeah well you know why I said those things then don't you?"
"Of course Marty." Merrill answered without even looking at Marty just staring at where she was hoping Drew would re-enter.
"Great well talk later." Marty said as he got up and walked out of the room.
Merrill didn't even answer Marty the last time she was too busy thinking about Drew. She felt like a little school girl with a crush on the new boy in class. But in this case the boy liked her as well.
Marty walked out of Merrill's room wanting to kick himself. That was his moment Merrill was alone and he finally had a chance to let her know how he felt. He could drop the macho front and let her know who he was underneath for the tenth time but he had a feeling that she would feel the same this time. But the fact she was in tears from what he said earlier on and the fact she wouldn't even look him in the eye when he was in the room made him sick to his stomach so he made a weak apology and got out of there as fast as he could.
Drew had been watching them the entire time and smiled as he watched Marty's bad attempt at an apology and Merrill didn't even look at him. Drew still watched Merrill as she climbed into coffin but kept the lid open allowing him to look in. Drew wanted to go see her but that wold be suspicious for now they'd wait. Till everyone else went to bed. Right as Drew was leaving Merrill's room Merrill read his mind and he told her to meet him when everyone else went to bed that night to have some time alone.
Drew watched the rest of the group as they slowly went to bed. The first to go was Marty with no Merrill to gawk at and Drew wasn't there for him to try and fight with he tried to annoy Karl and Essie as they played chess but gave up on that after half an hour. He then tipped over the chess board with his telekinesis and went to his room after five minutes he was asleep.
"So who do you think Merrill's going to end up with?" Essie asked resetting the chess pieces on the board after Marty tipped it over.
"What do you mean?" Karl asked picking up a pawn and a bishop up off the floor.
"You honestly don't know? Essie asked as she positioned her king and queen.
"No I don't so enlighten me." Karl said moving his pawn forward.
"Ooh 'enlighten' thats a big word for you Karl" Essie said as she took Karl's pawn.
"Very funny. Now come on tell me what's up with Merrill?" Karl said as he moved his queen to take Essie's bishop.
"I mean Merrill likes Drew but he doesn't like her and Marty likes her and she doesn't even notice." Essie said as she took Karl's queen.
"Whoa hold up. Marty likes Merrill?" Karl asked as he moved his knight to block check.
"See even you didn't even notice." Essie said as she put Karl in check again.
"Yeah but I don't notice a lot of things, Merrill notices everything within a hundred yards normally." Karl said as he too Essie's knight.
"Your right you don't notice alot of things but if Merrill doesn't get over Drew or he finally puts her straight that it's not going to happen someone is going to get hurt severely, and it will probably be Merrill." Essie said as she took Karl's bishop.
"I think your right about that but I don't see Drew sitting down with Merrill and giving it to her straight." Karl said as he smiled as he took Essie's queen.
"I think your right about that also, and I think that I am right that, that is checkmate."
Karl looked down at the board. he realized the last move he made was a trap and Essie's queen was the bait. "You are right again ." Karl said as he tipped over his queen.
"That was fun." said Essie as she stretched. "I'm going to bed you clear up."
Essie got up and walked off to her room leaving Karl to clean up the chess pieces as usual but Karl didn't mind the day he wins a game of chess against Essie she didn't lose deliberately she'd have to clean up but for now Karl was left holding the bag or in this scenario a chess board.
Not long after Karl had went to his coffin his he was asleep and now it was now time for Drew to get up and meet Merrill. He did a quick scan of everybody else and they were all asleep he then checked Merrill's room her coffin lid was still open her eyes were closed but she still had a radiant smile on her face. Drew slowly got up trying not to make a sound. He then walked from his room to Merrill's at normal pace to make as less noise as possible. He made his way into Merrill's room and over to her coffin her eyes were still closed but she wore her smile. He walked round to the top of her coffin bent down and kissed her softly on the forehead.
"I'm awake you do know that?" Merrill said her eyes still closed.
"I know I just felt like kissing you." Drew whispered.
"What's stopping you?" Merrill said as she opened her eyes.
"Nothing." Drew answered as he bent down and kissed her again.
"So we just going to do this all night not that I'm against it?" Merrill asked sitting up in her coffin.
"I think we should get out of here and find somewhere we don't need to whisper."
"How about the library or is there too many bad memories in there?" Merrill asked.
Drew remembered all the bad thing's the library reminded him of. It was there Dillan was bitten by Karl. It was there he spent a lot of his time with Sherry before she died. It was there he painted Sherry's portrait that nearly killed her before Merrill found out how to save her. But Drew just smiled warmly at Merrill and said "The library sounds perfect." He helped Merrill out of her coffin took her by the hand and they were off. They went through the exit at the top of the cellar through Murdoch's office luckily for them he was already away to bed. They made it to the library without running into a single day student.
"OK we can talk here what do you want to talk about." Merrill asked not caring what they talked about as long as she was with Drew.
"Anything." Drew answered looking at Merrill lovingly.
"Like?"
"Um.... how many boyfriends have you had?" Drew asked.
"As a human or vampire or both?" Merrill asked as they sat against an old bookcase Drew cuddling her.
"Both" Drew said.
"None" Merrill answered.
"I know thats not true." said Drew.
"How do you know that?" Merrill asked turning round and wrapping her arms around his neck.
"You've got me." Drew answered.
"I guess your right there." Merrill said as she kissed Drew.
They sat there in the library all night talking about everything that meant nothing and everything that had meaning in there life. They talked about life before they were vampires. Merrill did not do that much talking on this subject but she loved to listen to Drew as he talked about how he lived when he was known by Edward and how he was a world renowned painter. This then led to them talking about the adventures they had at Mansbridge. There was the monster the fury sent that they killed there was the time they danced together and Merrill tried to convince Drew that vampires could fall in love. Merrill thought about bringing this up but she knew in her heart that Drew no longer believed that otherwise he wouldn't be holding her in his arms lovingly at the time.
"We've got ten minutes until sunrise, we better head back." Merrill said as she got up and stretched.
"Your right, knowing Murdoch the second the sun hits the school he'll be up making sure we haven't killed anyone or left the grounds."
Merrill giggled but thought to her self that Murdoch would never do that over the time they have been here a trust would have built up between them. Normal student teacher relations were not that strong but in this case they would have to be for the sake of the experiment.
"Let's go then." Drew said as he held out his hand.
Merrill gripped it and they sped off to Dr. Murdoch's office they opened the door slowly and peered in. It was empty and the cellar door was still open. They thought i would make to much noise if they had to open and close it when they got back. They crept in slowly and decided to gently ease the cellar door shut together. They both slowly pushed it forward trying not to make a sound. When it finally slid into place with a thud. They closed there eyes as they heard the door closing and waited to hear one of there classmates waking up or coming out to investigate the noise. After a few minutes of hearing nothing they both breathed a sigh of relief and proceeded down the stone path to there rooms. They looked at each other and smiled. They had both had a great time with each other. Merrill believed she was finally with her one and Drew had finally found the girl he wouldn't get in trouble for seeing.
"Well what do we have hear?"
Drew and Merrill's smile faded. They turned to wards the direction of the voice to see Essie standing there her arms folded just staring at them.
"I went to see if you were OK before I went to sleep Merrill. But when I go to your room what do I find? An empty coffin with the lid open. So I have look around to see if you got up to stretch your legs but what did I find? Nothing. Then I get the idea I'll go ask Drew if he's seen her and even if he hasn't he can find her with his mind but guess what I find? Not Drew just an empty coffin. Then I check the rest of the boys and there both asleep but you two are nowhere to be found." Essie finished and exhaled deeply.
Drew and Merrill looked at her for a minute then looked at each other they had no idea what to say. Should they tell the truth and come clean and tell everybody it wouldn't be a bad idea but then there was Marty. One of the only reasons he was at this experiment was Merrill and if he couldn't be with her he might leave and be found by the fury.
"You can stop thinking about how you are going to lie your way out of this. I can see by the hand clamp you two weren't out for a nice exercising stroll." Essie pointed in between Merrill and Drew.
Merrill and Drew looked down to see there hands were still grasped together. They had forgot to let go with all the tension of Essie explaining how she spent her night.
"Busted." Drew finally said.
"Your right there." Essie said with a smile.
"You can make jokes about us to the others tomorrow but I'd like to get some sleep." Merrill said.
"Don't worry about that. I won't breathe a word." Essie said.
"Excuse me?" Drew asked astounded at what he had just heard normally if any secret surfaced in this cellar Essie would make sure everybody knew.
"I won't tell the other two about you. It's obvious you want to keep a secret for now you can tell them when you are ready just make sure it's the right time not at a time it could cause a bomb to go off.
"Oh thanks Essie your a good friend. Merrill said. "I'll see you both tomorrow then." She kissed Drew on the cheek and walked off to her room.
Drew watched as Merrill walked through the drapes into her room. He was about to go to his room as well but Essie wasn't done with him.
"Hey grease lightning."
Drew turned back to Essie. "What is it?"
"Sit down." Essie said as she pointed to a chair.
Drew trotted over to the chair and pulled it out and sat down. He watched Essie as she paced up and down in front of him.
"OK listen Drew." Essie finally said.
"I'm listening."
"I've known Merrill for a while now and over that time I've learned a lot of things about her."
"Like?"
"She has no sense in fashion she loves to read and loves to learn."
"You could learn that after knowing Merrill for five minutes what's your point?"
"I'm getting there. The one thing I've always known, the same thing I see every time is that she believes that you are her 'one' and she would do anything to please you and I mean anything."
"What you mean by that?"
"I mean she'd take a bath in holy water if it would please you."
"You honestly think I'd ask her to do that?"
"Thats not what I mean. In the dark life of being a vampire you are Merrill's light. If you decide this isn't right and end it your going to hurt Merrill and I can't allow that. You have to make sure she is your 'one'. "
"What do you mean you can't allow it."
"I know you've heard the 'you break her heart I'll break your leg's' phrase?"
Drew nodded.
"Well with me it's 'if you break her heart I'll make you drive a stake through yours' you understand?
Drew was astounded at Essie's big sister over protective attitude he didn't know she cared for Merrill so much. But still managed to reply "I understand."
"Good, you can go now." Essie walked back to her room
Drew got up and walked in to his room and climbed into his coffin. He closed his eyes and tried to remember the good parts of the night. But every time he saw Merrill's face he saw Essie's right behind her asking if Merrill was the one. Drew knew he had to get some sleep so he decided to turn his thoughts to something else. He thought of how the next night would turn out they would try and see if Dillan was indeed infected with the vampire disease. Drew took a short look in Dillan's room just to see her. He was sleeping peacefully her red hair covered half her face and she was one more roll from falling out of her bed. Drew left the room and was back to looking at the top of his coffin. He wondered how Dr. Murdoch had intended to prove Merrill's theory correct and how he would counter act it. But alas he could not think how and after a few minutes of pondering he fell asleep.
Dillan woke with a jump as her alarm clock burst into life and she fell out of bed. She got up and rubbed her shoulder. She then looked over to her room mate Mimi who even though the noise of Dillan hitting the floor probably woke up the students next door merely raised her hand to say be more quiet.
"It's time to get up." Dillan said as she threw a pillow at Mimi.
"Other people need more beauty sleep." Mimi said as she threw Dillan's pillow onto the floor.
"Trust me theres not enough hours in the day." Dillan said as she walked over to her wardrobe.
"Whatever you say." Mimi said as she turned over to try and get back to sleep.
"Come on Dr. Murdoch is going to give us our essays back today." Dillan said as she picked out her outfit for the day.
"Never seen you so happy about getting a paper handed back."
"The papers never been copied off other people to perfection so I would get an A and I got away with it."
"Fine go and get some breakfast I'll get ready and I'll meet you down stairs." Mimi said as she pulled off her covers and struggled to get out of her bed.
Dillan gave her a smile and made her way for the door. She gave Mimi a wave as she closed the door behind her. She was almost skipping down the hall with other students slowly coming out of there room doors. They all looked tired as they were just up but Dillan was full of life. She was keen to be presented an A from her teacher with a beaming smile. She made her way down the stairs leaping the last five and landing on both feet and nearly head butted Malcolm as he walked in front of the stairs.
"Somebodies in a good mood today." Malcolm said as he his glasses back up the bridge of his nose.
"We get our latest essay's back today." Dillan said with a smile.
"I thought I was the only one who was looking forward to it." Malcolm said astonished at how happy Dillan was about getting an essay back.Dillan was an average grade student so was never too cheerful about getting an essay back but here she was.
"You thought wrong then, I'll see you in class." Dillan said as she jabbed Malcolm on the shoulder and walked away to the kitchen to get her breakfast.
Malcolm watched her walk away until she disappeared through the door to the kitchen. He still stood there doing the thing he did best, think. Why did Dillan seem so excited about this particular essay it wasn't on any important subject. He finally decided he would ask the person who would know the answer, Mimi. He had to be sure he wouldn't get caught up in the girls dorm's otherwise his perfect spotless record would be marked with such an insignificant spot. He slowly walked up the staircase to the girls dorm's keeping his hand on the banister in case someone came down and he had to leap over the banister, he knew he probably couldn't leap it but it was his only escape route. He made it to the top of the staircase and peaked round the corner there was one girl there in her pajamas Malcolm waited for her to walk to the bathroom. The second the door closed he made his way to Mimi's room he chapped the door frantically. He waited anxiously for the door to open. Suddenly the door on the far side of the hall opened.
"What do you want?" Mimi asked when she saw Malcolm standing at her door.
Before Malcolm would answer he barged by Mimi into her room just before anyone saw him. He took a deep breath and looked at Mimi. She looked angry.
"What do you want you idiot?" Mimi asked ready to explode.
"Why is Dillan so excited about getting this essay back today?" Malcolm asked.
"Why would you ask that?" Mimi asked sounding nervous she didn't want to have to tell Malcolm that Dillan copied his essay and used it for her own.
"She's smiling and acting nice to me."
"Oh is it weird someones actually acting like a friend to you?" Mimi said with a smirk.
"Very funny, but come on tell me why is Dillan so happy about this essay?"
"I have no idea." Mimi said as she turned away from Malcolm to hide he face that looked concerned.
"Mimi?" Malcolm said.
"Yeah"
"Your a bad liar, so tell me the truth."
"OK but you have to promise you won't tell anyone else."
"I promise now what is it?"
"Well Dillan is so excited about getting this essay back because."
Malcolm leaned in to hear the answer.
"She didn't write it."
Malcolm seemed a bit confused but not that much this was one of the possibilities that explained why Dillan was so confident about her essay. "If she didn't write where did she get it. On line?"
"Thats the thing Malcolm, she copied it off of a few people in our class some of it off of Nick and a few others but mostly off of you."
Mimi waited for Malcolm's reaction was he going to breakdown and become scared that Dr. Murdoch found out and he could be expelled for assisting Dillan or would he become angry at Dillan for copying his paper and start throwing furniture about or go down stairs and scream at Dillan until his lungs were sore.
"No wonder shes so confident." Malcolm answered with a smile.
"What?" Mimi asked oblivious to what Malcolm had just said.
"My essay if you don't mind me saying is top of the line so she picked the right person to copy."
"My God, how can you be so cool about this. If Dr. Murdoch finds out you'll be expelled.
"I'll tell him I had nothing to do with it and I'm sure Dillan will back me up."
Mimi didn't know what to say she knew Malcolm was smart but to have this much faith in one essay and in Dillan who was to say she wouldn't tell Murdoch that Malcolm let her copy his essay. Mimi knew this was not a good thing to think about your friends but it was in her nature to suspect the worst. Mimi was about to say something to Malcolm when she saw the clock out of the corner of her eye.
"We better get to class." Mimi said to Malcolm as she pointed at the clock.
"Your right we'll see if Dillan gets caught for cheating or if she gets a well done from Dr. Murdoch thanks to me." Malcolm finished with a smile and made his way to the door.
They both made there way down the hall to the staircase Mimi leading to make sure no one else was up ahead so Malcolm wouldn't get caught. They made it to the staircase undiscovered they looked over the banister to see if anyone was below, luckily there was no one there. Everybody was probably already at class. They made there way down the stairs slowly. When they had reached the bottom they were less tense about getting caught they picked up there walking pace and made it to class just as Dr. Murdoch was entering.
"Just made it." Dr. Murdoch said with a smile as he held the door for the two of them.
Mimi and Malcolm made there way into the class. Mimi took her seat beside Dillan and Malcolm sat beside Nick.
"Why didn't you meet me for breakfast?" Dillan asked as Mimi got out her books.
"I lost track of time." Mimi lied weakly hoping Dillan would believe her.
"You should start wearing a watch then." Dillan replied.
Mimi breathed a sigh of relief.
Meanwhile over at Malcolm and Nicks table.
"Hey man why you late? And why did you show up late with Mimi? You making out and lost track of time?" Nick asked with a wide grin.
"Very funny, no. I was doing some extra homework and I bumped into Mimi on than way to class." Malcolm replied. His lie was fluent and more believable than Mimi's.
"OK man." Nick replied "I was just joking." Nick said as he jabbed Malcolm in his arm quite hard.
"Right everyone quiet down." Dr. Murdoch said as he made his way to the front of the class. He then lifted up a set of papers on his desk. "I'm guessing you know what these are?"
Everyone knew it was there latest essay. But Dillan still nodded with excitement.
"I have to say with some of them you let yourself down but with others I was fairly impressed."
Dr. Murdoch then went round the class placing the sheets of paper on his pupils desk's some shouted with glee others said nothing and started to look ill. When he got to Nick, he did neither of the reactions he just looked at his paper for a minute then sat back in his chair folded his arms and put back on his cool persona that everybody knew. The only person he didn't use it on was Sherry. When it came to Malcolm he looked at the paper with a look of satis faction then looked at Mimi with an 'I told you so' look. Mimi just snarled back. Dr. Murdoch then gave Mimi her paper back. She had gotten a B a good grade but she didn't celebrate she was to nervous about seeing what Dillan had gotten and if Dr. Murdoch had caught her cheating. Dr. Murdoch finally put Dillan's paper on her desk she frantically picked it up and looked at it.
"Yes!" Dillan said restraining herself from jumping out of her chair.
"I'm guessing you got an A?" Mimi asked not sounding happy at all for her friend.
"You guess right." Dillan said as she held the paper up to Mimi's face.
"Alright I think it's time we begin todays lesson." Dr. Murdoch said as he collected the papers back in.
For the rest of the class Mimi sat there half asleep she was caught between two thoughts she was happy Dillan had not got caught but she was annoyed that she got a better grade than her because she cheated. She knew she shouldn't be having these thoughts because Dillan was her friend but she couldn't help her self. She also started to wonder how Dillan managed to steal Malcolm's paper long enough to copy parts of it and give him it back without him noticing. She finally left that subject to a mystery and not long after she came to this conclusion the class ended. The class gathered there books and proceeded to the door.
"Dillan could I speak to you for a minute?" Dr. Murdoch asked just before she made it to the door.
"Sure sir whats up." Dillan asked, she wasn't nervous because Dr. Murdoch had already given her paper back to her graded and allowed her to gloat about it even if only for a second.
"I'd like to talk to you about your essay." Dr. Murdoch said.
"Sure but can we do it later I have to get to my next class."
"Yes thats why I wanted a quick word with you could come down to my office tonight so I could ask you some questions about your essay."
"I'd like to but you gave us a surprise test for tomorrow I'll have to study all night to get up to scratch." Dillan was a bit nervous now, she thought Dr. Murdoch did know she had cheated.
"I'm sure you can read Mimi's note's she'll be in the library all night like she always is the night before a test."
Dillan was cornered she didn't have another excuse to give. She would ultimately have to say yes. She thought if there was any other reason why Dr. Murdoch would want to ask her about it. She knew it was good but Malcolm's was obviously better. She finally answered "OK then." and that was it. She set off to her next class.
Dr. Murdoch was in his office later sitting at his desk staring blankly ahead, he checked his watch Dillan would be down with one phone call from him then the night would begin to unfold. He hoped to himself it would end tonight but then he remembered that tonight they were just trying to prove Merrill's theory correct. He took a few deep breaths and picked up the phone and began to dial, it rang four times before someone answered.
"Hello." Dillan answered.
"Hello Dillan it's Dr. Murdoch could you come down to my office now?"
"Sure I'll be down in a few minutes."
"By the way does Mimi know I've asked you to meet me tonight?"
"No sir, why?"
"I saw how jealous she looked when you got your paper out this morning, I wouldn't want her to think you are getting special treatment." Dr. Murdoch's lie was clean fluent and rehearsed in his mind to perfection.
"I know what you mean, OK sir I'll be down in ten minutes."
"OK see you soon." Dr. Murdoch said.
Dr. Murdoch then put the phone down and walked over to his door and looked out into the lobby it was empty as he suspected at this time of night. He then went back into his office and walked over to the entrance to the cellar turned the crest to the right and the door slid open. He walked down the small stone path to be greeted by his five night students all waiting anxiously.
"So we on for the night doc?" Marty asked.
"Yes but in order to get Dillan to walk down here you will need to hide, understood?"
"No problem." Drew answered.
"OK well you'll have to go just now, Dillan will be down any minute."
As Dr. Murdoch finished the vampires sped off to there own respective hiding places.
Meanwhile outside the cellar Dillan was just closing her room door to make her way down to Dr. Murdoch's office she walked slowly down the hall trying not to make a nose she didn't know why she was trying to be so quiet it just seemed the right thing to do. She made her way to the staircase and and proceeded to walk down it as she expected the place was deserted. Mimi was probably in the library studying. She reached the bottom of the stairs and walked to wards Dr. Murdoch's office he knocked on the door lightly and slowly walked in she took one last look behind her to make sure no one was there and closed the door behind her. She looked in the office for Dr. Murdoch and couldn't see him. She scanned the room to see if anything was out of the ordinary because Dr. Murdoch wasn't the type of person who was late or forgot to cancel and there was the fact she had to talked to him only ten minutes ago. Thats when she noticed the opening at the bookshelves. The crest on the wall had been pushed to the right and the wall had moved back. Dillan crept to wards the opening in the wall she saw a stone path led down to the left. It was to dark for her to see.
"Dr. Murdoch are you down there?" Dillan asked the dark abyss.
"Yes Dillan this is my wine cellar by the way. I thought I heard something so I came down to investigate and I tripped over something and have seemed to have banged up my ankle up pretty badly, could you come down and help me?" Dr. Murdoch sounded in real pain.
"'OK just hold on I'll be down in a minute." Dillan said as she walked forward into the darkness.
"I'm over here." Dr. Murdoch called out.
"Where?" Dillan asked she was starting to feel scared what if there was someone down here with them.
"I'm over- NOW!" Dr. Murdoch shouted.
Not half a second later Dillan felt her self being forced forward. She pushed her hands out in front of her and felt something cold and hard.
"Lights."
Dillan heard Dr. Murdoch's voice and suddenly the room became illuminated with light. The firs thing Dillan noticed was she was in a cage it was about two MITRE's tall and three meter's wide. She then turned around to look for the way out. when she turned round though all she saw was Dr. Murdoch and five very pale looking people about her age looking at her.
"Merrill" Dr. Murdoch said.
As soon as he said this Merrill sped away up the to the entrance to the cellar and in five seconds she was back.
"Done I put the pillows in her bed." Merrill said.
"OK now let's begin." Dr. Murdoch said.
Dillan was traumatized at what was going on, she had been locked in a cage by her teacher and five strangers who looked as though there had been no blood flow in there body for a long time.
"Dr. Murdoch what the hell is going on?" Dillan asked now in tears.
"I'm sorry Dillan this is for you and your friends own good." Dr. Murdoch replied his voice devoid of all emotion.
"W-w-what do you mean by that?" Dillan asked as she banged her hands against the cage.
Dr. Murdoch just ignored her and turned to his night students. Merrill looked like she was about to cry as did Essie and Karl but Marty just stared st Dillan blankly not caring. Drew on the other hand looked like he wanted to rip the door of the cage and carry Dillan to safety. But he knew he couldn't.
"Now we have to see if Merrill's theory was right." As Dr. Murdoch said this he walked over to the storage of blood packs.
The group of vampires all wanted to ask how they were going to do this but none of them could bring themselves to speak.
Dr. Murdoch returned to them with a blood pack in his hand.
"This a special type of blood it has been genetically modified so it has triple the amount of nutrients a normal blood pack has."
The group wanted to ask what he was going to do with it but once again no one could say the words they all wanted to say.
Dr. Murdoch then walked over to Dillan and ripped open the blood pack.
The smell of the blood caught all of the vampires at once there eyes turned red and there fangs appeared. They had to restrain there selves they had to control there cravings after all that was one of the main reasons they were in this experiment. They all then caught site of Dillan she was on the floor in the cage breathing heavily she finally sat up and they all saw what she had become. Her eyes were red and her fangs were razor sharp.
"Merrill looks like you were right, well done."
The thing was Merrill didn't want to be right, this was the one time she hoped she was wrong, if it meant having to see this she wanted to be wrong.
"So what do we do now?" Drew asked finally able to speak.
"I've been going over that in my head the disease should stop and relieve control in a day or so and we don't have that long so we have to find a way to neutralize it."
"Any ideas doc?" Marty asked.
"Just one." Dr. Murdoch said as he put his hand in his pocket an pulled out a small bag of blood.
"Whoa doc what you going to do with that won't feeding her make the disease stronger?" Karl asked.
"Maybe but this isn't just normal blood." When Dr. Murdoch was finished he threw the bag to Dillan.
Dillan caught the bag and ripped it open with her teeth she squeezed the content's into her mouth the blood oozed out the side's of her mouth down to her neck.
The other vampires were disgusted to watch. They hated to think that was what they looked like when they fed. Like a wild animal near death of starvation.
After emptying the contents of the bag Dillan grabbed her stomach and went into convulsions she started to scream in pain. Drew walked forward to help her but Dr. Murdoch threw his arm up in his way.
"Can't you see what it is doing to her?" Drew shouted at his teacher.
"This is was what I hoped would happen Drew just wait a minute." Dr. Murdoch's voice was still emotionless he didn't even look at Drew as he spoke to him he kept staring at Dillan.
When Dillan stopped screaming she collapsed forward and didn't move for about two minutes. This felt like the longest two minutes of the vampires un-dead lives. Dillan then twitched she then took in a deep breath and sat up.
The vampires couldn't believe it she was no longer a vampire even if she just wasn't showing her fangs that would be near impossible with that blood so close to her.
"What's going on?" Dillan asked as she looked around to try and find out where she is.
"Essie would you mind?" Dr. Murdoch asked.
"Not at all." Essie answered she then walked over to Dillan and stared at her for a few seconds.
Not long after she had looked away, Dillan yawned several times and fell to sleep against the cage.
"She'll be out for an hour." Essie said.
"Thank you Essie." Dr. Murdoch said with a smile.
"Doc what was in that blood?" Asked Marty.
"It was normal blood with a small amount of silver laced through it." Dr. Murdoch answered.
"Really will this completely neutralize the disease in Dillan's body?" Merrill asked.
"As long as she takes the same dose of silver every day." Dr. Murdoch replied.
"How do we get her to take the silver everyday" Asked Karl.
"We put it in a medication that is used for people who have gotten long time sickness from food poisoning." Merrill answered.
"Excellent idea Merrill Essie made Dillan think she had food poisoning when we made her forget she was bitten by Karl." Dr. Murdoch said.
Karl's head fell when he mentioned this.
"Essie if you could get Dillan to believe this then this could all be over." Merrill said with a grin.
"OK I'll try when she wakes up, what do we do until then?"
"We wait." Dr. Murdoch said.
And thats what they did, Marty waited with Dr. Murdoch they both sat on chairs next to the cage waiting on Dillan waking up. Essie and Karl were playing chess at the other end of the room. Karl was nervous about Dillan waking up so Essie was beating him twice as fast as usual. Drew and Merrill were in Merrill's room just sitting on the floor in each other's arms not saying anything just enjoying the time they had together before Dillan woke back up. It was when Drew remembered that Dillan would be waking up soon there was a subject he had to bring up.
"So when do you think we should tell them?" Drew asked.
"Tell who what?" Merrill asked confused at the break of the silence.
"Tell the other's we're together." Drew said.
"Oh, when this thing with Dillan is over."
"OK we'll tell them then." Drew said.
"Why did you ask that anyway?" Merrill asked.
"I just don't think we should wait a long time before telling them, it would be better than them finding out on there own." Drew said.
"How's it better?"
"They might think I'm ashamed of you?"
"Where's this coming from?" Merrill asked.
"It's just.... after Essie caught us last night and you went to bed she had a small conversation with me."
"What about?"
"If I hurt you she'd make me stake myself, I have to make sure your the 'one' otherwise I'm dead."
"I can't believe Essie said that." Merrill said sounding surprised.
But to Drew the sticking up for Merrill part was weird but the making him stake himself was easily believable.
"Don't worry about Essie we won't break up your my 'one' and I'm yours aren't I?"
Drew paused and was about to answer when Essie came busting into the room.
"She's awake, and I thought I ought to be the one to break up the cuddle session." Essie said staring at Drew.
The three of them walked out of Merrill's room to see Dillan awake in the cage her eyes darting from side to side trying to find out where she was. She was breathing heavily and her face was soaked with sweat.
"Dr. Murdoch what's going on?" Dillan asked panting.
"It's OK Dillan it's going to be OK, your going to wake up in your bed tomorrow morning with no memory of this at all." Dr. Murdoch said calmly.
"I doubt that." Dillan said still breathing heavily.
That's when Essie walked toward the cage she leaned close into Dillan's face, Dillan just stared back blankly.
"Look at me, really look at me earlier tonight you were experiencing severe stomach sickness and a fever, you told Dr. Murdoch who took you to a hospital, you there found out that the food poisoning you got before the end of the semester left permanent damage in your immune system and you have to take daily medication from now on." Essie finished and stepped back from the cage and Dillan collapsed.
"Thank you Essie now Karl could you return Dillan to her room and we can put this ordeal behind us?" Dr. Murdoch said.
"With pleasure." Karl answered as he unlocked the cage and picked up Dillan and sped off to the exit of the cellar.
"Now everyone try and get some rest I'll see you all tomorrow night." said Dr. Murdoch he then made his way to the exit of the cellar.
After Karl returned the group all removed the cage and put the table back into it's position. Marty sat at the table making a pyramid of card's with his telekinesis, Essie and Karl played chess. Drew and Merrill were in Drew's room.
"Is it time?" Drew asked.
"Yes?" Merrill answered.
Drew took Merrill by the hand and they were about to walk out of the room when Merrill stopped dead in her tracks.
"What's wrong?" Drew asked.
"Do you remember what we were talking about earlier?" Merrill asked.
"Yeah." Drew answered.
"You didn't answer me."
Drew thought about what Merrill was talking about then he remembered. He took her by the shoulders he looked her right in her eyes.
"Yes" he said.
Merrill smiled took him by the hand and they walked out of his room to the table the rest of them were sitting at. None of them saw them approaching.
"It's a good thing this whole Dillan thing is finished." Karl said.
"Oh well noticed Karl." Said Essie sarcastically.
"And I think you'll notice that's checkmate." Karl said with a smile.
Essie looked down at the board frantically scanning the pieces. She then looked up at Karl and said "Well played." and tipped over her king.
"Hey guy's." Drew said to get every bodies attention.
The three of them turned round to see Drew and Merrill standing there hand in hand.
"We've got something to tell you................"
Up stairs Dr. Murdoch was writing a new journal entry.
'Through the recent events at the Mansbridge experiment my student's have learned that what looks resolved never always is. And such worst case scenarios can bring people together, I believe my students are all closer together after the latest events than ever. And will excel in later tasks set by me. I believe it is time.'
First story finished ;D
