Based around the role-play game by white wolf called "Vampire: The Masquerade", Kindred charted the trials and tribulations of the (un)lives of several clans of vampires living alongside humans in San Francisco.
All the Kindred (the name the vampires gave to themselves) Clans - from the often violent Brujah, the gypsy-like and streetwise Gangrels and the hideous yet almost religious Nosferatu to the business-like Ventrue and the seductive Toreador - are under the rule of one Kindred, the so called "Prince Of The City". Any breaches of the Kindred Laws, including breaking the Masquerade by revealing their true nature to humans, is brought before the Prince whose decision in all things is final. Almost all those found guilty of this crime are punished by being given their Final Death.
The "Embraced" of the title is the term for the act of making a human into a Kindred vampire. Any Kindred with the desire to embrace a mortal must seek permission from the Prince Of the City - any mortals embraces without his consent will be sentenced to Final Death , so serious is the that breach of the masquerade.
San Francisco's Prince is Julian Luna (the late Mark Frankel), a proud and just Ventrue who, by way of the death of his loyal bodyguard Stevie-Ray who was the leader or Primogen of the city's Gangrel clan, is thrust into contact with Caitlin Byrne (Kelly Rutherford), a no-nonsense human reporter with whom Julian falls in love. Couple this with the dogged pursuit by maverick cop Frank Kohanek (C. Thomas Howell) who is aware of the existence of Kindred and has a grudge against Julian personally for sentencing his Kindred lover, alexandra Serris (Kate Vernon) to death for her accidental revelations, it makes for dangerous times in city.
Guided from a course which may lead to him breaking Kindred Law by his Princely predecessor Archon Raine (Patrick Bachau) and his "best friend" Daedalus, the Primogen of the Nosferatu Clan, Julian must also keep control of the rapidly escalating war between the Gangrels and the Brujah - the two clans detest each other and are only kept from out and out war by the power of the Prince.
And Julian must also watch his own back, as the Brujah Primogen, Eddie Fiori (the wonderful Brian Thompson) has designs on being Prince Of The City himself. Fortunately, Julian is protected by his untamed and hot-headed new bodyguard, the new Gangrel Primogen Cash (Channon Roe - he is one hot vampire! Yum! Hes the one I watched the series for and I was not disappointed!), who embarks on an ill-fated affair with Julian's beautiful human descendant Sasha (Brigid Brannagh).
This was an amazing series which lasted a mere six episodes. Sadly, though a second series was apparently bordering on being commissioned when the death of their lead, Mark Frankel, in a tragic motorcycle accident scuppered all plans for a continuation. As such, there are many plot threads left untied. But the legacy is a well crafted and intriguing plot that has more twists and turns than an itchy snake (*to self* Oh, thats a terrible comparison, 'Lissa! Truly terrible!). But, like our beloved Vampire High, it has retained a cult following which has secured it a DVD release! I think 'Lissa may be investing on that soon!
Has anyone else seen this? Whats your verdict? For those who haven't seen it, or you good folks who mght want a refresher on the series, here are a few of the best links for Kindred information.
