Pirates Of the Caribbean : The Curse of the Black Pearl
This is a masterpiece! I lurve watching the buckles being swashed and I defy you not to adore Captain Jack Sparrow. Ahh, Mr. Johnny Depp at his piratey best!
Orlando Bloom is on top form as Will Turner, orphaned and rescued from a shipwreck and raised as a blacksmith's assistant, a delightfully heroic and lovestruck young man. Who happens to be a bit handy with a sword, too. He loves Elizabeth but cannot bring himself to break the chains of decent moral behaviour and tell her.
Keira Knightley is Elizabeth Swann, the tough-talking, clever and brave daughter of Port Royal's Governor Swann, who yearns to be pirate or at least be allowed to have some kind of adventure in her life. And what a kind of adventure she gets! Oh, and did I mention, she is in love with Will but because of her station in life, and her love and respect for her father, is unable to admit as such.
Geoffrey Rush has huge fun as the diabolical and cursed Captain Barbossa - all at once terrifying and entertaining.
But I have to admit that my biggest soft spot is reserved for two of Barbossa's cursed crewmen, Pintel (Lee Arenberg) and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) - two more hapless pirates you've yet to meet and a superb double act.
"The Black Pearl" of the title is a ship bearing black sails and a crew of pirates cursed to a living death until they return all the pieces of the treasure they stole and return it along with the "blood to be repaid". By moonlight, these sailors and their captain, Barbossa, are shown as they truly are....oh, but that would be telling. Their curse brings them to Port Royal - home, separately, of Elizabeth and Will, and the temporary prison of Captain Jack Sparrow. When Elizabeth is taken by the pirate crew, Will, with Jack in tow, races off to the rescue and thats where the fun really begins!
One of my favourite quotes is this line from early on in the film.
Norrington (to Jack): "You are without a doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of."
Cpn Jack Sparrow : "Ahh, but you have heard of me."
Pirates Of The Caribbean : Dead Man's Chest
Over Christmas I watched the second installment of the "PotC" trilogy and, I have to say, I was a lil disappointed. Don't get me wrong, its very good. There are many fantastic swordfights (the waterwheel springs readily to mind, and the three-person battle against Davy Jones' crew) and clever special effects, but it just doesn't feel like its in the same league as the first "Pirates". Almost all the familiar faces return (including my favourite duo! ), and some new ones appear, one of which is the unforgettable countenance of Davy Jones.
The story picks up a few weeks/months after the end of the first movie. There have been huge changes - poor Will and Elizabeth, due to be married, are in grave danger. They are offered a deal. Will must track down Jack Sparrow (Captain Jack Sparrow!) and trade his compass which doesn't point north for a full pardon and a contract to be a privateer (merchant sailor) in the employ of England. Elizabeth, meanwhile, will be kept a prisoner in Port Royal as insurance that Will will return. If Will fails, both he and Elizabeth will be hanged as originally planned.
Desperately, Will scours the oceans to find Jack - and locates his ship marooned on a remote island. What possible threat would cause Jack abandon the sea for land when his heart belongs to the open ocean? Simple - 13 years agoJJack made a deal with Davy Jones, the octopus-bearded scourge of the high seas, and Davy is ready to collect Jack's side of the bargain. But Jack has no intention of paying his debt (in this case, his soul to serve abord Davy Jones' ghostship, The Flying Dutchman, for 100 years or be fed to the Kraken) and instead get Will into more trouble than even Will himself would have thought possible!
Yeah, its a fun ride but the ending is simultaneously annoyingly abrupt (to lead into the third movie there are many loose ends left) and very intriguing.
I just can't wait for later this year when "Pirates 3" comes out, just to find out what happens.
'Lissa.
