In episode 8 'What's Up Doc?', the Mansbridge students start to question who or what their teacher is. Let's examine the evidence for and against him being a vampire. Against: He can go out in daylight He eats normal food For: The Elders trust him Malcolm can't find any evidence on the Net that Murdoch actually exists Vampire mind powers don't work on him He manages to put Karl in a choke hold rendering him unconscious - Murdoch says he knows self defence but please, Karl can chuck Marty across a room so he should certainly be able to deal with a middle aged man Most d*mning of all, there is an interview with David McIlwraith on the official Vampire High website www.vampirehigh.tv/En/pages/set_personnages.htm (click on Murdoch's pic) where he talks about Murdoch having the wisdom of the ages. He says that when his character is teaching his students, Murdoch has the internal understanding that, "I'm not just a guy who studied this at university...I've been there, I know what I'm talking about." Are you confused? I sure am. He's obviously immortal, or perhaps was. Is he half-vampire and half-human, or was he a vampire and is now somehow cured? Enquiring minds want to know. If any of you have a theory please feel free to share. Id like to think that I'm not the only person out there obsessed with this particular issue.

Oh! I've remembered another one. In the penultimate episode Murdoch asks the caged Bridget how she found Mansbridge. She says that she can smell another vampire a mile away and Murdoch takes a very careful step back from her with a funny look on his face.

Don't forget though that , in ep12 (the quivering), marion hacketts vampire detector does not register anything when she is alone with murdoch!
then again, the others were only a few metres below her and it didn't pick anything up, so it was probably a crap example

I personally thinking he is some sort of hybrid with a few tendencies of a Vampire and some of human... shame we don't have more to judge him on...

I thought I heard somewhere that he's supposed to be half-vampire or something

Me too, ithought he was suppost to be half vampire, like he was born to a vampire and a human...if that can work, oh i don't know.
I wish we got to know his back story and who he really was...that would of been really good

I wish we got to know his back story and who he really was...that would of been really good Hehe! Yeah, but think of the fanfic possibilities it opens up! I agree that he'd most likely be the child of a vampire and a human - it would explain why none of the night students' powers work on him and maybe even how he can keep them under control. The way he stopped Karl during the "nutrition-free blood" problem was impressive. No normal human should be strong enough to resist a hungry vampire, right? Oh gawd, I'd better stop before I get carried away again! *lol* 'Lissa

Wpuld of been good if we got to go back in time to see him and how the others gott o be vamps...more fanfics lol. I laughed when he stopped Karl, yeah a "human" is really able to stop a hungry vampire..suuuure!! Get carrie away, is all fun

They probably couldn't have used the "pregnant mother bitten by a vamp" idea in the show - it sounds a lot like the origin of Blade so they might have been accused of infringing on their copyright. Oh yeah! I agree that a personal history for each character would be brilliant! I'll have to have a think about them... 'Lissa

LOL i was kinda thinking of the start of Blade I'm going with the, born to a human and vampire. Im cirious to see how they all were human and when they were turned and how old they are all suppost to be, are they suppost to be 16??? i'm thinking more 18/19, even though their at school hee, they just don't look 16, but hey that's the way for many a show

Hehe! I thought you might have been thinking that. Great minds think alike? lol They do look more than their mid-teens but, maybe, in order to get good actors, they'd have to use ones who were a little older? Not that younger actors aren't good, of course. Ahh, but we digress. I made an observation about Murdoch which may offer another solution. In "The Summoning", as Murdoch begins and ends the titular ritual, he becomes the talisman (which features on the cover of the Mansbridge Experiment journal) just before transforming into the scrying bowl. Could he, perhaps, be some kind of magician or alchemist who succeeded in acquiring "The Philosophers Stone"? Just thinking on an alternative line. It wouldn't explain why the Elders trust him so much, but it could be why he's immune to vampiric powers. And so long lived, as is implied. I think I think too much! Hehe! 'Lissa.

Hee writing that i thought i'm sure someone will say that's a Blade rip off LOL I'm loving the idea of him being a magician or something on the lines of that, more intriging than just a half vampire/human....maybe he worked for them for many years or something with other projects Yes i think they all fit in nicely with VH, all have different personalities and the actors are all great choices

Found this interesting piece on the Net and thought this could explain the history of the mysterious Dr Murdoch maybe he was a Druid who had been attacked by a Vampire who managed to retain his humanity and maybe thats way the Elders choose him.
In 1717, well after the darkness of the Inquisition had finally lifted, a few men and women resolved to bring the teachings and traditions of Druidism to Light once again, forming "The Most Ancient Order of Druids". The first Chief of this order was John Toland, who united five factions of Druids that had been practicing in secret throughout Britain. Other early leaders of this organization included the famous William Blake. Lewis Spence, Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Isaac Newton, Bulwar Lytton and Dr. John Dee were most likely Druids as well. In 1964 this group evolved into two separate factions. One became known as "The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids". The other offshoot that developed from this group was "The Ancient Druid Order" who greeted the Summer Solstice within the stone circle of Stonehenge

In some vampire lure there is the theory that if a human and vampire have a child it is not half human half vampire, But it is born a slayer. Perhaps murdock falls into this lure cuz that wud explain everything. A slayer could control his killing instinct and made good with the elders. That would make him a perfect person to teach vampires to control their killing instiinct. He cud defend himself as he did with carl.

Sounds plausible but does that also explain why the Vampires can't read or effect him. But that would also give a deep underlying theme to the next season when it begins. But that doesn't explain how old he is, I would like to see what happens when an animal is introduced into the story line knowing of course that in Vampire lore they get all spooky and nervous around Vampires, what kind of effect would the presence of Murdoch bring, because every time he is present you can almost feel a calming effect exuding from him that he is never required to use force to defuse a situation, except when Carl attacked him and even then the distinct gentleness used to subdue him causes questions to arise, How strong is he really???
